File Transfers behind a router.

Ok now that I am doing internet sharing, how do I open the ports to allow file transfers? Here at MSN it says:

<< To enable file transfers, enable both incoming and outgoing TCP connections to the 6891-6900 range of TCP ports. This allows each sender to perform up to 10 simultaneous file transfers. Note that if only TCP port 6891 is open, users are only able to perform one file transfer at a time. >>

I'm not sure exactly how to do this or if this is even what I need. I am doing internet sharing and am behind a router. I also want to use direct connect and
here it says

<< Q: I have a NATing router and would like to set Direct Connect up for active mode. What ports does it use?
A: By default, Direct Connect Uses port 412 for TCP and UDP data. This can be changed in the Direct Connect settings. To make Direct Connect work properly with your NATing router, you must enter your routers WAN IP address in Direct Connect's "Force Direct Connect to report this IP address" text box, and check associated check box.
>>

I appreciate all the help i've been getting in networking forum :)

Which router do you have? Generally, to do a FTP, you have to forward port 21. I'm using Direct Connect with a SMC Barricade router and I have it connecting under passive mode. You might want to give that a shot. Hope this helps.

Well with passive mode, you can only see people who are NOT in passive mode, and with regular mode you can see everybody, which is why i'd like to be in regular mode again.

Also i'd like to be able to send files on MSN and I have to know what ports and how to open them to be able to do these things.

I've never used a server as a router. But I am a DC user. With my router I forwarded ports 411-414. And in the settings I reported my outside IP address and forced DC to report it. Active mode works great.

Well what is your server then? Kind of hard to tell you what to do without knowing what you use? You need to forward the port range that you stated in your first post.

This is my question, how do I do this?

What are you talking about? I built the server, what do you mean what is my server then? Do you need to know the specs? And yes my whole question is, How do I forward the port range that I stated in my first post? You're telling me to do it when my question is HOW?

Yes, I meant what kind of OS on the "router"

You could have just said I am using Xp and ICS instead of router ;)

Anyway, now to answer your questions. The easiest way I can try to help you would be to send you to the Microsoft site explaining how to forward the ports to your main machine. Go to this link and read! Then return with questions if need be.

I hope this helps.

Nobody has mentioned it yet but I think it would also be helpfull for you to know what NAT is. Here is a link that will give you some information that might make this usefull.

Also do read the link above by Wik because that explains how to make changes using ICS

Yeah I understand how to forward the ports, but I don't understand how I know what ports i'm supposed to forward.

Basically if somebody could tell me the port numbers I need to open to allow msn file transfers and direct connect transfers I could do it. I don't get what the internal and external port numbers are or how to find out.

Sweet I got it! Thanks ojai.

The problem was I was having was I put in my internal IP number instead of my ISP IP number. I did that because in the example IP it gave, it was a 192.168.x.x number so I assumed it meant internal
