How do u guys do this? I know there are programs like laplink etc, but is there a USB port method to transfer files from laptops to desktops. I usually have large files on my laptop from work and I need them on my home PC. Right now I email them, but it takes time and uses up bandwidth unnecessarily. I would like a simple plug and transfer method using a USB cable to connect each machine. Please suggest how to set this up.

It kind of depends on how you want to go/how much you want to spend. You can start here for some simple networking tips/concepts.

Option 1: Install Network Interface Card (NIC) in each computer (PCMCIA in the Laptop), and Connected them with CAT5 Crossover cable. (Cost about $25 between Desktops, $45 between Desktop to Laptop). You can connect at a speed 100Mb/sec.

Option 2: Get a USB Direct connect Module (this is a USB cable that has a special Network module installed on it). Connect the two computers through the USB; install the Drivers and your are Connected. T his type of connection support only a speed of 10Mb/sec. (this will cost about $40).

Example: Inland USB Quick Link Cable.

Option 3: Direct Cable Connection, uses printer parallel cable, or COM serial cable. The most inexpensive, but the slowest, and most awkward. (Cost about $10).

You can find settings info here:
Direct Cable Connection.

The easiest ? Option 2
The Cheapest ? Option 3
The fastest with elegant look for the future ? Option 1

You can buy a USB file transfer cable for about £25. This will let you transfer files much faster than you would be able to e-mail them.

I've never used one, but apparently they're easy to set up.

Option 4: Both units need to have IEEE1394 ports (firewire) and Windows ME and/or XP which have firewire networking support, though I have heard that Sony has drivers for firewire networking that works in W2K. End result, plug-and-play network and 400Mbps file transfers. I think I transferred my MP3 collection (1.22GB) in about 11-14 minutes.

My desktop doesnt have a firewire port nor does my toshiba Portege 3480ct. I think my options are the USB cable or the cat 5 cable. Although the USB options sounds less complicated.

thanks for the replies.
