Remember the Tacoma Narrows bridge, constructed in Washington state in 1940, and the standing wave it generated that destroyed it?

We've all seen the film clip.

Remember the car that some idiot drove out onto it and then abandoned?

Turns out, the guy left his paralyzed dog in it. Someone else tried to rescue it, but he ran out of time and had to retreat.

All these years and this is the first I knew. Thank you very much, nameless public TV documentary I just clicked on.

It's just a sad little fact that, at this late date, decades after I first saw that iconic clip, I could have done without knowing.
