file syncing utilities?

anyone know of any decent ones?

i keep an image collection on my desktop that i also transfer to my laptop. what i've been doing has been trying to find decent syncing utilities that will transfer the files reliably, but so far my search has been less than fruitful.

apparently it's difficult for some computer programs to handle a queue of 120,000 files. it's only like 15 gigabytes, though.

does anyone know of any better syncing utilities? thus far i've tried microsoft synctoy (shit.), toucan sync (crashed after 1 folder...) and one other that i cant think of.

what i'm doing now is setting up an FTP server on my desktop with goldenftp (no security, but i'm behind a firewall, so whatever.) and queuing file transfers with filezilla. but it has no abilities to handle syncing, it just copies. and even it has crashed 3 times thus far. thanks to filezilla i havent lost the queue, though. just have to restart the server.

Syncback

if you read the op, you would have noticed i was extremely dissatisfied with synctoy. i have tried it, it was not pretty.

That's why you should try Windows Live Sync!

that angers and confuses me!

alright, suggest things that are not microsoft... >_<

it's not that i dont like microsoft, it's that that looks very..automated. i'm looking for something built to do 1:1 mirrors of a directory, and scan and update as needed. synctoy crapped out due to the # of files, i think. same with everything else. i havent tried syncback yet.

Understand. Since I already have been a Roboform user for years (Siber Systems) - their new GoodSync was a perfect fit and works well - even in Windows 7.

i tried SyncToy 2 years ago and didnt like it either. some files and folders werent being sync'ed. i might try it again someday as i liked it its interface. for the last year, i've used the free SyncBack. it has LOTS of options that can overwhelm a new user, but it sure lets you fine-tune how you want the sync'ing to happen.

so try SyncBack!

Also not free, but sweet is Beyond Compare. They have a 30 day trial (days only count on days you launch the program too).

I agree. On Windows and Linux, this software is a huge help to me. Their support forum is inhabited by some very knowledgeable users, and their devs (including the company owner and the chief dev) frequent the forum as well.

For everything from synchronizing directory structures to comparisons of file contents, this software is hard to beat. The comparison sessions are highly customizable, giving you a lot of latitude in the way you set up comparisons.

Quoted for what I wanted to really say, but better! This software is well worth the $30 I think it costs.

Good luck I guess.

i'm trying this now. it seems to be working thus far. it's nice to actually see the progress being made, and the fact it starts immediately alphabetically instead of indexing everything.

Bumping an old thread but I was looking for a program to replace SyncToy and this looks great so far, thanks.

Strange, but I don't think it is due to the # of files. I use it at work over a corporate network and sync hundreds of folders with hundreds of thousands of files with no issues whatsoever.

Windows Live Sync is great. A few days ago I synced thousands of files (20+GB). I did that over the local network. Then I left my house with my laptop. I threw about 100 pictures into my pictures folder and they automatically started syncing over the internet.

I've hated every sync program I've used but I really like Live Sync so far.
