File sharing without any login - Windows XP Pro

I currently have file sharing between my desktop and laptop files. In order to access the files, I login as use that I have setup on the desktop with various permissions. This works perfectly.

Now I'm trying to setup a Media PC in living room which is connected to the desktop through various switches (media - wireless router (and switch) - gigabit switch - desktop). I want to allow READ access to several folders on several hard drives WITHOUT anykind of authentication. This would mean that anyone connected to the router wirelessly should be able to stream music and video from my desktop.

How can this be done?

I would suggest just adding a user(unprivilaged) to all the computers and grant that user read only access to all network shares. You can even go as far as to disable local logins on that account, and its much better then allowing the guest account etc...

How can I setup my MCE computer to view the shared drives off of my desktop without having to login?

You can just change the file permissions on the share to EVERYONE and that should allow everyone to connect to that particular share. That is how I do it with my small network.

Map them as a network drive? 🙂
