thought i'd make a lil thread about good file sharing programs just as a general information thing. i didn't know of any of these programs until like half a year ago, but they've changed my 'computer-life'
Direct Connect
Download and install the application, set some options, and connect to the server to get the hub list. DC hubs are run privately by every day people, who set the rules.
+very large selection of files, particularly divx, mp3, programz, etc.. possible to find almost anything in sitcoms, movies, series, etc.
+hubs run privately, therefore moderated. little to none weird crap like child porn, racist stuff etc. act normal and share real files, or you get kicked and/or possibly banned from the hub
+very good and clean interface, customizable
+chat interface, friendly people almost anywhere, respect for one another and the whole 'sharing-spirit'
+lots of people with very fast connections, speeds of 50 kb/s are common, possible to get 100-200k+ if you're lucky
-pretty nerdy, requires some technical information to be entered
-often you will be unable to connect to a hub, sometimes for a non-obvious reason. can take a bit of work to get connected to a good hub and can be frustrating
Comment: my favorite
Kazaa Lite
This is actually a modfied version of 'KaZaA', only this is free of spyware, ads, unneeded features, etc. Everyone connects to the same main server, from which you search and download
+decent amount of files, often possible to find pretty rare files
+good downloading options. if more than one source has the same file, kazaa will download bits from different users which can dramatically speed up a download
-a bit too many pages for the interface. lots of clicking back and forth, not too handy
-very little divx and movies
-lots of illegal and offensive stuff, not moderated
-no real community feel
-rarely speeds over 30kb/s
Audiogalaxy
Mainly a website interface, with a small program download required. you run the program and go to their website, where you search their database and click to download. the program then queues and downloads files to your harddrive
+HUGE selection of mainly music. possible to find the most obscure local music that has never been heard by anyone but people from your country.
+ftp search, find FTP servers and upload/download from them if you want
-crappy (web) interface. slow and confusing, just sucks.
-registration required
-moderated for many commercial tracks, but only as much as the search engine is set to. ie if you search for 'Metallica - Enter Sandman' there's a good chance/risk that audiogalaxy will have files with that name banned, and you can't download/share them. however, try searching for 'metallica sandman', and if someone has a file named 'metallica_enter_sand.mp3' you can probably get it. confusing, yeah...sorry, best way I could explain it
