I am trying to connect my bro's laptop to my PC so that I can transfer some files but I am not able to do it. I am using a crossover cable and a LAN Card. Can somebody please give me the steps for this? I gave the IP address for both the systems and I managed to ping and I was able to see his computer in the Network however I am not able to get into his Laptop and share files. somebody told me that I need to create user accounts and stuff but I have no clue how this works! Please help!

Thanx a lot

Well, you can start reading about it HERE. I haven't played around with XP, but I hear it works a bit like 2k with a bit more hand-holding. Basically you need to use Control Panel->Users and set up a user on each machine with the other machine's name. Make sure file and printer sharing is enabled. Be sure to use a password; I've found 2k to be cranky if you try to omit one.

Good luck, and let us know how far this gets you.

For setting up users and shares in XP, you can just follow the instructions for Windows 2000 as listed in my FAQ. It will work the same with some minor cosmetic changes.

Also by double clicking the Network Neighborhood icon on the XP machine, you will see 'Setup small home or office network'... (on left near top).

Click on that and follow the wizard.

tried setting it up. I can see my computer on the laptop but when I try to open it says "//Arun is not accessible. The remote procedure call failed"

🙁 What did I do wrong?

Did you set up the accounts on both machines? If the laptop is named "Laptop" and the desktop, "Desktop" (not recommended names) the laptop needs a user of "Desktop" and vice versa. Also, check to see if you can ping each machine from the other. If you can, you're headed in the right direction.

Keep plugging!
