file sharing and tracking?

with a court judge saying ISP must log file sharing between computer on various p2p networks, how can they tell what you are sharing ?

lets say i use kazaa lite to download a song or video, how can they tell what im downloading?

will this keep any others here from using p2p?

Ok. A little networking primer.

Network traffic consists of packets, e.g. TCP/IP packets. Those can be captured, and names of files, usernames, and other information can be extracted (unless encrypted). The ISP will simply have to grab and process the packets/headers that are known to contain file names in services such as Kazaa. It would be similar to your phone company saving the # of the person you are calling, but not the actual conversation.

If ISP wants, they can even infect the traffic (namely, the file being transmitted) with a virus REAL-TIME, or corrupt the file, or do whatever they want.

How do you know we.. err.. they haven't been to your door already? 🙂
