In both Win98 and WinXP I am unable to send files in programs like AIM and ICQ. I cant even send emails in outlook. I have to use hotmail to send one. My ISP is given by the apartment complex and they dont know $hit. I am running XP now and I need to figure out how I can send and recieve files. On AIM I cant even do a connect to share images. If anyone can help thanks.

sounds like you're behind your apartments firewall. i'd need to know more about how you get 'net access to be able to help you. is it dhcp?

yeah I think I am behind a firewall. I talked to the tech support "guy" and he didnt seem to know what could be wrong. My girlfriend has my same isp in a near apartment complex and she can send files on aim tho, thats why i know its got to be me somehow. the guy said both apartments have the same setup. I told him i cant send files on aim or icq and that I can run an ftp server but I am the only person who can connect to it. He told me I cant run an ftp server because I dont have an internet address viewable to the outside world. Thats all I really know. My internet connection is "ethernet" I know thats not a connection but I just plug my ethernet into the wall. I think its a couple T1s on my apartment complex. I Dont know if its DHCP? If you explain how to find out I will. Thanks for helping.

DHCP - Obtain an IP address automatically in TCP/IP Properties > IP Address.

Static IP - Specified an IP Address in TCP/IP Properties > IP Address.

What you could do is ask the building manager to open AIM & ICQ in the Port Forward rule to alow it through the entire subnet or your IP only. If it get worse, then have petition to have the firewall wide open, or you could just buy your own ADSL line.

if you just plug it in, then it's gotta be DHCP

i agree that port forwarding is really your only options...and it seems that you'd have to talk to the apt. complex about that.

not sure how your friend is getting out...maybe someone else has some ideas.

I dont understand how a firewall can block aim image connections. Would that be on a different port than normal aim messages? The ISP guy doesnt seem to know what hes doing. :(

to share aim images, you have to be able to establish a direct connection, and for some reason being behind a firewall prevents that. you might want to look deep in the AIM preference and see if there's any firewall settings...
