Here is the nitty gritty:
Hardware Budget between $750-$850
15 Macs/15 PC environment.
Server will be used only as a file server.
Server will only be used to store automated system backups from clients via Retrospect or Windows backup utility or other.
Server will be set up in Raid 1 with Windows Server 2003 standard.
Server is critical in that it will store peoples backups, but is not critical in that if it goes down, someone may concievably not be able to work or access files.
I highly prefer an Intel based system, and do not wish to get into an AMD/Intel debate.
Don't need keyboard, mouse or monitor.
The clients all work the same hours I do, so I will never get a call at home asking to fix the server etc.
Backup of server will be done to larger network drive.

So I can build or buy. Dell has some cheap PowerEdge value servers I can configure for that price but I can build one for a little over 800 bucks with a dual core P4 and more storage capacity.

I think building is ok, with Antec case/PSU, 512mb OCZ DDR2, Intel 945G with ICH7R MB, dual core P4 2.8, 2 x 250 Hitachi SATA II drives in Raid 1 and floppy and cd/rw drive.

Looking for 1) rec's on build or buy Dell, and 2) if build - are components satisfactory for situation described above.

Thanks

If you decide to build your own I'd ditch the dual core and add more RAM. At least 1 GB preferrably 2. What you are asking the server to do is not CPU intensive, just RAM dependent.
