I have a extra PC here and I thought I would make it into a file server. I would like to be able to get my files over the internet instead of a local network. I have tried quite a few programs and most of them are all based on web servers not really file servers. Can anyone recommend an easy to use program? Also I am as smart as a man buying condoms for his daughter, so please explain using little words.

ok funny man.

some things first:
> I'm assuming your running Windows.
> security.
--if you run a FTP or VPN (virtual private network), PLEASE run them on some non-default port between, say, 9000-65000. (default port for FTP is 21)
use strong passwords (google that if confused).
-- firewall! use one! (not as necessary on non-windows OS, but a good idea)

I suggest trying filezilla ftp server (windows)
http://www.google.com/search?&q=filezilla%20ftp%20server
Its been working good for me.

short filezilla server guides:
http://www.tweakfactor.com/articles/tweaks/ftpsetup/3.html
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=272080

But if these files of yours are 'important and private and unencrypted' then you'll either want some VPN program (with encryption), or configure SSL encryption on filezilla server (I haven't done this before).

Even with your mental handicap, I would still suggest linux/samba, and use ssh and sftp to get your files from "out there".

Look into FreeNAS. It's free, it doesn't require a very fast computer to run, and it can do alot of stuff. It's also got very good documentation, and It's simple to use. When you get adventureous, you can schedule remote backups from other computers onto it. You can also host it online so it's like your own file server.
