File refresh not automatic

I have a laptop with WindowsXP Pro sp2 running on it. When I am in a folder, and I choose to change a name of a file, the name stays the same, until I go up top to the menu bar and choose to refresh the list. It used to refresh the name automatically, so that the change you make is immediately seen. Anyone know how to change this back?
