I cant stand invisible, and I enable visible on every machine I work on.

Visible always. When using a machine that has them hidden, I turn them back on.

in windows explorer...
tools, folder options, view tab, check "hide extensions for known file types"
on xp anyway, might be slightly different for 2k or earlier
