file copy, file names, and windows

Does anyone have a solution out there for copying files on a mac, to a network share that is NTFS (over SMB), and will automatically adjust for characters that are incompatible to the destination?

e.g., OSX/Folder/Name&whatever.txt -> NTFS/Folder/Name_whatever.txt

I thought that it did, anytime I have copied over files that were inadvertently incorrect it left me with files that had '_'s in them.

If it doesn't, then I have no idea what I did.

maybe that's something new? I'm working on 10.3 here. I found a nice program that will do it for me... sorta. http://www.publicspace.net/ABetterFinderRename/

I wonder if there's a free script for this. This just lacks the ability to copy at the same time.. so I have to duplicate the data (don't want to work on live data).
