Hello, I've been messing around with some file converstion "freeware/shareware" tools trying to get a buch of PNG and GIF converted to JPEG so i cram as much as i can onto a single DvD as i can get away with. However im curious as to why some tools seem to cut the amount of data it converts it down to by diffrent amounts for the same task. one file coverter cut a file down when coverted to JPEG to 1/6th the orignal size when anouther file coverter given the exact same fine and the excat same task only cut it down by 1/3. whats the diffrence, and can anyone suggest a good "free/shareware" one?

IRFANVIEW

The reason you get different sizes is because JPEG is a lossy compression scheme and some software will compress the image more than other software. It is a balance between how much of the originals quality you are willing to sacrifice and how small of file size you get. Irfanview lets you select the quality of compression for JPEGs. So you can play around and find how low of quality you are willing to accept.
