RESOLVED!!!!!!

Thanks for the help.

OK someone can help that will be great! I had a major crash, the power supply literally "blew a fuse" or a capacitor is more like it and also took out the motherboard at the same time.

But it's not the hardware that I have a problem. I have put the hard drive in another system so I can save some of the files that is located on it. The computer that crashed is an emachines C2480, so the operating system is specific to the configuration of that hardware and I simply can't boot it up on another system.

The files that I want are located in Documents and Settings under my name, which is also set up as an administrator account with a password protection. I have access to all of the other accounts created under Documents and Settings but not mine. If any one knows how to access thes files please help. Thanks 😕

Edit: I have the hard drive as a secondary hard drive in a system. It comes up as the F: drive. I can access nearly all of the files. But when I try to access the file that I need it states: F:\Documents and Settings\****************** is not accessible. Access is denied.

Sure thing, you need to take Ownership of the directory that it isn't letting you inside of.

Procedure
  1. Right-click the directory, choose Properties, and go to the Security tab.*
  2. Click the Advanced button.
  3. In the panel that opens as shown in this picture, put a checkmark in the box for Replace owner on subcontainers and objects, then specify an account from your healthy computer's Windows installation, and hit Ok.

*if you have WinXP Professional and don't see the Security tab, then open My Computer, click Tools > Folder Options, go to the View tab, and uncheck Use Simple File Sharing at the bottom of the list. If you have WinXP Home, then reboot into Safe Mode and then you will have access to the Security tab.

I am in the process of replacing ownership. I have a question in regards to when I fix the computer that it came out of, will I be able to easily switch it back? The broken computer uses Win XP Home Edition, and the healthy one is XP Proffessional.

You can also boot using BartPE which should prompt you to login with your user and password to access the files, then copy them to a non-password protected part of the drive. You can do the same booting with the WinXP CD and using the Recovery Console but it's much more tedious since you have to use DOS commands.

Thanks for the Help I took ownership and have backed up these files on another hard drive. Still when I boot it up under its own system, will it make a problem to open them up in that boot up?

What precisely will you be doing in terms of hardware from this point?

You are not going to replace an Emachines mb with the same board are you? If not, you will likely want to do a fresh install of Windows anyway.

For hardware replacement I got a linkworld 350watt PSU and yes I have already purchased an FIC AM37 mobo which is an identical mainboard as the emachines. The reason I did this is so that if I could not retrieve the files I would be able to boot up the old sytem and have the files available in that route. That's the theory anyway. I really would have preferred upgrading to a better motherboard and faster processor and ram, but in the end I believe it will all work out.

I did gain access to all of the files that i needed and transferred them to another hard drive for backup. Thanks again.

😉Update, everything is back together and working great. Thanks for the assistance. It's wonderful to have this kind of support available.
