101 Dumbest Moments in Business
20. Fiji Water
Crisp. Refreshing. And only ever-so-slightly poisonous...
Los Angeles-based Fiji Water runs magazine ads for its bottled water with the headline "The Label Says Fiji Because It's Not Bottled in Cleveland."

Cleveland officials retaliate by running tests revealing that Fiji bottled water contains 6.3 micrograms of arsenic per liter, while the city's tap water has none.

Fiji counters by saying its own tests found less than 2 micrograms per liter.

Yep Fiji's counter was it only has this much poison, not that much. :awe:

Pretty much all water has some level of arsenic, especially ground water. EPA - Basic Information about the Arsenic Rule

Pretty much all water has some level of arsenic. I believe the EPA acceptable level is 10 mcg per liter.

Yea but for them to advertise they are so great and better then... then get called out on it just shows Fiji bottles water is as much BS as other bottled water.

The EPA allowes 10 parts per billion for arsenic. Not sure how that converst but that is all I could find.

I suggest next time you do a blind taste test you get at least a couple people with some actual semblance of taste buds.

But you would always say this.

Even if the study encompassed a million or billion people, you would say "oh man their taste bud suck. My magic taste buds are soooooo much better."

And stop bringing up the Coke vs Pepsi guy. Coke and Pepsi have different ingredients that aren't in trace amounts.

I don't see what all the bs in this thread is about

some water has a smoother texture while some water feels more grainy in your mouth..some waters taste more like minerals than others..

i can appreciate the argument that no one should pay premium for water, but some of its more enjoyable

qft , buying water that's shipped half way across the world is beyond idiotic

Yeah, and Fiji water claims its environmentally conscious... while it ships WATER to the other side of the planet, burning tons and tons of diesel along the way.

No, people convince themselves that some water is 'smoother' than other water. Take most brands of bottled water & many municipal tap waters & do a blind taste test and people won't be able to tell the difference.

Every blind test I have seen has shown people simply can't tell bottled from tap water, yet every bottled water fanatic claims that they can. Sigh.

All 1 of them? Was it those jokers Penn and Teller? Don't take that show for anything more than cheap entertainment. Did they disclose how many people said the water tastes like a shitty rubber hose before finding some idiots without tastebuds? No? Not surprising since the show has as much to do with science as CSI. Anyone who takes that show to be anything more than the basest of entertainment's an idiot.

If you aren't talking about that stupid show, I honestly don't believe you. I don't think anyone gives enough of a shit to have water taste tests, certainly not a bunch of them.

Water is distinctly different, and I've paid a lot lot for water that was mediocre to bad. I've also had tap water that tasted exceptional. Anyone that can't taste the difference in waters doesn't have any business commenting on any food product.

Nothing will ever compare to the well water I grew up on. 175' deep multiple spring fed well, extremely high in iron and calcium (yep, hard-as-hell water). Came out ice cold at about 35C, crisp and refreshing.

This is what I have been thinking all along in this thread. "Oh!!! People watch 'Bullshit!' and take it for gospel!" I love when people use that as an arguement against recycling too. Or countless other things..

The first link proves my point, that water tastes different. Whether that's good or bad is up to the individual.

I'm not sure what the second link is for. I admittedly just skimmed over it though.

The third link backed up the first link, but testing 3 different waters with your family is hardly a rigorous test :^D

That works out to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Not what I'd call "ice cold." :p

FWIW, I rarely buy bottled water, but if I do, I also prefer the taste and "mouth feel" of the Fiji water over the heavily filtered tap water brands that make up most bottled waters.

The first test shows that people prefer CHEAP bottled water. My point all along has been that there is no actual taste difference between bottled water. Some tap water sucks, and some is as good as bottled water, but there is no actual difference between bottled waters.

It's all in your head.

It's pretty arrogant to say someone shouldn't enjoy something.

Actually, it kind of makes you a douche. Here's how you can be socially acceptable:

Person A: I like this brand of water! It tastes better than other waters I've tried. I really enjoy this!

You: Really? I myself don't usually drink bottled water because I don't think there's much of a difference between them. I'm glad you found something you enjoy though!

Person A: Thank you! I'll have to buy you one sometime so you can try it.

You: I would like that.

See how easy that was?

LOL come on. This is ATOT. You know that isn't going to happen. How can one be so polite and open minded when they have a super model on each arm and trying to count their moutains of money?!?!?

I drink from a water cooler that I fill with cheap, reverse osmosis cleaned water (that comes from north texas) because I live on the mexican border. People on both sides of the border don't give a shit about the environment dump whatever into the ground. The water tastes awful and I don't want my short stint in this shitty area to give me cancer.

So, I don't have a problem with bottled water. I just understand how marketing, branding, and ourdesires affect our perceptions and realize that is the only thing that differentiates the cheap stuff I buy from the expensive shit you buy. I've drunk fiji and other expensive mineral waters. It doesn't taste better & comparing it to the different types of sodas or alcoholic drinks is just silly.

OK:

1) The water was given to me, I did not buy it.

2) I checked Kroger last night, and it's $4.99/six pack. I think I can swing that. Especially since I'd only drink it once in a while.

WTF? I wouldn't pay that for a six pack of Mt Dew. which is far superior to water in every way.

Oops. 35f I meant.
