Fighting games for the PC, Why not?

I've always notice how the PC gets turned down when it comes to good games that were done on the DC or PSX. But when a PC game comes out it also goes over to the console platform but never vice versa. Fighting games such as Marvel vs. Capcom or SF alpha EX or even Mortal Kombat. When will we actually see the fighting games come to the PC with FSAA and Bump Mapping effects or even S3TC, Multiplayer capabilities and so on. So what is holding gaming companies back from releasing these games?

Good question. There used to be a few ports in the distant past, like Street Fighter 2 or Mortal Kombat, but in recent years fighting games seem to have dwindled to nothing. I remember playing OMF2097, that was one fun game! So much so that I downloaded it a few months ago to play it again.

Anyway, don't really have the answer, hardware and software wise the PC is more than capable to handle 2D and 3D games. Controller wise, there's the KB, mouse, joystick, joypad, and countless other controlling devices that could possibly be used to play fighting games to great effect. Perhaps the market just isn't there?

Most people play fighting games with their friends or relatives. I would rather play a fighting game with my friends on a TV than on a PC.

Can a PC support 2 controllers at the same time?

Of course a pc can support more than one controller it can support as many as you throw at. Point is, who wants to still sit in front of Big ass t.v. with horrible image quality when you can have a nice 21in monitor playing fighting games at high resloution with much more detail than any console can put out. And sitting in front of a t.v. challenging friends, BAH you want a real challange get online and go head to head with another person from half way a cross the country.

Problem with online play is that lag will make it impossible to defend against opponents button mashing. A comment made elsewhere on this same topic was that most gamepads come with profiling SW that allows you to record "macros" of particular button presses. What fun would it be to play someone who has all the killer moves pre-programmed?

Too bad, I'd like to play Soul Calibur or DOA2: Hardcore on my PC.

Well who fault is that if someone isn't smart enough to pre program there configuration into the gamepad, thats like saying its not fair for some ppl in q3 to have custom binds down that you didn't think of first. That comment about lag, as long as there is any kind of online connection there will be lag from 2 cups with a string of yawn attach all the way to OC-96 backbones.

But when you think about lan party latters, that right there can gather over 10 to 20 ppl just for a lan event or even 2 laptops going head to head over wireless air port adapters. The combinations are almost endless. With update patches for better image quality and game play or better characters maybe even better mods that ppl can think of.

People who have a PSX or Deamcast aren't the kind of people who have 21" monitors on their PC. True, a 21" monitor with a state of the art beat em up on the PC would kick anything on a console plugged into a TV, but it's just so much easier to spend £100 on a Dreamcast with Soul Calibur and you're away.

I don't agree with macros in fighting games. It's a live competition. Would you let a figureskater record every one of his/her routines on camera, and bring the best routine to the Olympics and use it to win a medal? Or would you let Maurice Green(100 meter sprint record holder) set a world record if he happens to break a world record and catches it on tape during practice? You're supposed to be able to do those things when it counts, and under pressure.

Those same ppl with dreamcast and psx's seen my pc with the Radeon working at high res, There first words out of there mouth was "OH SH@#@T" Now they own pc's don't even play with dreamcast no more so go figure eh. If its so easy to just get a dreamcast and play soul caliber, then why can't it be the same with pc? I mean you can buy Madden 2001 and get psx2 and you can also get madden for the pc boot up just as easy. So what is really stopping the Fighting games from coming to the pc. I think its popularity. If you think about how much sports games have already grown on the pc, now racing games are becoming more and more popular. Space sims,FPS and RTS the pc has every category covered except the fighting part. The developers know this and they know if you take sf2 alpha from the console and port it to pc, then whats left for the console fans to play? Then the console isn't worth anything.

There's a difference between a Quake bind and gamepad macros because while every Quake player has a .CFG to edit, there are no rules about gamepads and accompanying software. People may have 4 buttons and a D-pad like a Nintendo or 4 on top and 4 shoulders like a PSX or have 10 buttons like my M$ Sidewinder. I just use the default driver for my pad and don't even have the profiler installed.

Also, while binds can automate some features in Quake, you still have to aim and run and stuff. It's not the same as Jeff K. having the "Triple Front Flip to Lateral Rip Opponents Lungs Out His Butt" move pre-programmed.

i had the original mortal kombat when it came out on the PC, it was fun for a while, but you would get sore hands from using the keyboard for all the button combinations. and i didn't really want to buy a gamepad. personally i think fighting games are made for the arcade and nothing more. an arcade stick and button layout gives you better control. and also i just lose interest in gihting games fairly quickly, they are too repetitive.

ReMeDy{WcS}:

I totally agree with you in that there should be fighting games on the PC, and yes, they will look considerably better than on any console currently available.

Developers porting beat em ups onto the PC aren't going to lose sales on the consoles, as they (largely) are in different markets. I guess they assume that there isn't the market for it, just as there isn't a market for flight sims (in cut down form) or RTS on consoles. Civilization didn't do at all well on the PSX, neither did Theme Park.

Remember not everyone can afford a decent spec PC, a Dreamcast for £100 with Soul Calibur, or for that matter, a PSX with Tekken 3 for £50 represents much better value for money. Saying consoles are worthless if they lose fighting games doesn't really make much sense.

There is no reason why fighting games should not come out for pc. However you guys are arguing about wrong problems. cheats (or advantages some have with hacks) , joyspad, or web speed all does not matter. Simple fact is there are not much demand for fighting games among PC gamers. They did release MK4 (or other MK series) and SF2:super on PC but it didnt sell well so they didnt make more. Back then the PC didnt have that much power to match PS or whatnot however i think now PC's are the fastest hardware even faster then PS2(what a dissapointment). and PC componets evolve fast.

Dont get me wrong. if they released a Tekken 3 Tag for PC that had online playability. ill jump out of my seat now and get it! i have cable and fast enough pc with PS joystick hooked up so ill have no problem. And for ppl that dont they even play Q3 with 56k modem so they wont complain either.

SO the only answer for your question is because on previous releases on fighting games the demands were quite low and they didnt make any money. however now that we do have hardware that surpasses lot of games they can make i dont see any reason why they wont make games for pc. So instead of arguing with one another, make a patition or gather ppl to write companies to release games for PC to show them there are indeed demands for it.

I would like to see GT3 on PC more then else but on fighting games i want to see, Capcom vs SNK, Tekken 3 tag. And with online playability of PC, these games will make your skin as pale as conan obrian. :D

A generic fighting game is like Mortal Kombat, right? 2D, sidescrolling hack fest. Umm, if that's the case you already have plenty of fighting games, just in 3D (Q3, UT, Elite Forces...first person; MDK2, FAKK2, Rune...third person). All of these games have plenty of kombat action enchanced by a 3d environment. Or does the 3D environment automatically make it a separate category??? :)
