Fiddler on the Roof = best musical ever

Best ever? You gotta be kidding me.

What can I say, it's been my favorite since I was a child.

Fair enough. I do like it, don't get me wrong. But I'd come short of calling it the "best" out there. Which leads me to think.... what -do- I consider the best out there... hmmm. I should be happy that you didn't say Phantom or Les Miz or something. 🙂

Big fan of Forever Plaid right now, though it's hardly a "deep" musical. It's definitely a show that is palatable by the non-musical folk, and a hilarious 90 minutes or so.

No...

See below for uber-musicalness:

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
My first directing gig was doing this show. I loved it. One of the only movie-musicals that was then made into a stage show.

Holy Crap! There are others that pay attention to musicals.

Favorite Well-Known musical--Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Favorite obscure musical--The Robber Bridegrom

BTW

Fiddler ia a great musical. "Do You Love Me" is a great song and if you have good singers "Sabbath Prayer" is an deeply touching song.

Have done Joseph 3 times, around 200 performances or so. My favorite way to perform it as yet has been less flashy than the version most folks do, and instead focusing more on character and story.

Dang, didn't realize Robber was anyone's favorite. Fun little show to do. Have yet to see it produced. Would like to see someone else's take on it.

Fiddler is my second favorite after Les Miz. Saw Fiddler on broadway kinda by accident (went to TKTS late and that's what they had). It was a very fortunate accident.

Turner Classic Movies had "Musical Month" back last fall. Before that I never really liked musicals much, but some of the ones they showed were great.

Some of the ones I really enjoyed:
Oklahoma!
Top Hat
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Meet Me in St. Louis

Bebe Neuworth's legs in "Chicago" > Any production of "Fiddler on the Roof"

Nathan Lane in "A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To The Forum" > Any production of "Fiddler on the Roof"

Nathan Lane in "The Producers" > Any production of "Fiddler on the Roof"
