Fibre ONTs and laser class

Red Squirrel

No Lifer
I had to temporary remove my ONT to insulate/vapour barrier the wall where it's mounted so to prevent exposure to the laser beam I went outside to unhook the fibre at the NID so when the wire is dangling around inside as I'm working in that area I won't get hit in the eye. It's invisible light making it even more risky.

The box says it's only a class 1 laser which does not seem to be considered a hazard. But would that class only be talking about the box itself, or the incoming laser as well? Or would the CO equipment have it's own class rating for that? (I work there, I'm curious to check now...) These particular ONTs don't actually have a built in laser, they reflect the light back from the far end laser. Not sure exactly how that works but that's what I've been told. Guessing there are windows in the muxing where the laser is solid and the far end listens for bounce backs. There's about 64 customers per strand coming from the CO then it gets split to all the homes in the area. So perhaps by the time it's split, it's considered class 1?

The job is done now, I'm mostly just curious if anyone here knows more about this stuff.
