She wants to get him a good bottle of scotch for the holidays. He is an executive so I'd assume he can buy really good stuff. I'm looking for something around $50 for a small bottle...

any recommendations? She has no clue if he links single malts or blends.

I really like scotch, but I am not a high-end drinker (my limit tends to be $25 for a bottle). My favorite so far in your range was Balvenie (I believe the DoubleWood version). That should run you $40 or so. I wish I had more experiences though to really help out.

Macallan mentioned above was quite good, when I think I had the 15 year stuff but the 18 year old stuff was quite off. You just have to deal with occasional bad alcohol bottles when they get that old. Meaning, you need to be able afford to buy two. Blends are less likely to go bad in my limited experience, but you'll miss the joy of having a great single malt.

Lagavulin 16. It is 75$ but well worth it. Otherwise, Glenlivet 15 year, Glenfiddich 15 year,

An excellent choice to give as a gift. It's pretty much universally liked, even by people who drink the really expensive stuff. The regular Gelnrothes is also very good and it's about $50.

Speaking of scotch, I had the best single malt I have ever tasted over the weekend. It was The MacPhail's Collection 30 year Glenrothes. It was fantastic. I think the guy told me it was $240 a bottle. It was absolutely great.

I just got some 1987 Glenrothes that I'll be trying over the holiday season. I've never had glenrothes before. Any comments? I'll also have the 1991 Glenrothes on hand as well as their non-vintage one. Also, my younger bro is bringing Lagavulin 21 :)

Glenrothes is far and away my favorite single malt. I love every one of their editions (except the 1979 cask strength which I've never tried because it's $1000 a bottle!) I love their stuff.

(15) Rating: 8 A single cask bottling of Single Malt, Cask Strength, 50.4% (101 US proof). It displays the typical trait of a Cask Strength Scotch of clouding when mixed with water. The bottle is hand-numbered with the cask and bottle number, which means that another cask may taste a bit different, as casks of the same year are not married before bottling. Finding a water worthy of this Scotch has been difficult, all the ones I've tried carry their own flavours with them (chlorine, salt, metalic, etc.) (I've since found Evian.) A rich Highland type Scotch, my only criticism is the sharp attack when first sipped, unexpected of a 15 year old. Any Highland drinker should enjoy it though, I do. The bottle may cost a little more but remember you should dilute it some (even if you drink it neat), so you're getting more. A different bottling then the Balvenie Double Wood 12. (I recently saw all 3 in a set of miniatures for US$ 12.00, a good deal).

Yeah, I was reading about it and the 79 cask strength is ultra rare because its the bottling of the final drops of those casks. Not many bottles were made. The '87 is supposedly hard to find now as well, but certainly not as expensive as the '79.

A fair point.

Your wife is sleeping with her boss. The only viable option is to buy some expensive scotch and poison it. The reason for buying the good stuff is that you're sure he's going to try some soon, rather than sticking that cheap bottle on the shelf and never touching it again.

What's a good noob-scotch-drinker scotch to get started with? I've had scotch once, and disliked it. However, at one point in life I disliked beer as well.
