#$%#$%#% ffing dump truck scratched my wife's E350 4Matic

No Lifer
So I took the on-ramp southbound 404 from Steeles (404 is a highway for the non local) and merge into a parking lot. The highway is jam packed. So I settle in for the slow drive. No problem, my buddy is on the car so we chat. Out of no where I see a dump truck inching towards me in my rear view mirror. The car behind me starts homking at the dump truck and he veers off. But not before he rubs my vehicle. It sounded like rubbing off sand off your hands. And then the fucker proceeds to cut 3 lanes to the inner most lane with no intention of stopping.

I get home and there is a foot long scratch on the bumper guard. I am not sure I want to call insurance on this.

You didnt get the dump truck plate? Thats kinda odd..

I wasn't even sure if anything happened. I guess I should have copied it down. It was pretty busy and I wasn't sure enough to stop the car and assess.

<--- NOOB 🙁

What the hell happened? I am sure I hit edit

On the other hand, if I have to have collision with a dump truck, I guess I got off easy. About 10 years ago my father had a dump truck hit his door, shattering the glass. I guess a 1990 Camry was too small a car to see.

Fucking dump truck drivers around here drive like they are in a Civic.

I agree it sucks, but driving trucks is hard as hell. I've driven plenty of mid size trucks E/F450-E/F650 size and I never got used to the size of the thing, it's nothing like driving a normal car.

How much damage is there?

This ain't no pickup... it's a dump truck.

Foot long scratch on the piece that I call bumper guard, you know the strip of rubber that is supposed to protect your body from other car's doors? It worked this time :hmm:

Except it's a MB so I would not be surprised if that piece is several hundred dollars... I can just use touch up paint I guess.

Wife will not be happy...

Yeah don't call insurance on that. You'd risk your rates being increased arbitrarily, and to add insult to injury, the damage is probably less $ than the deductible. Can you remove the piece easily? It'd be a pretty basic (perhaps a bit labor intensive) job to do if you can get it off of the vehicle. You could use stripper + various types of sandpaper to get a really perfect surface, then take it to someone who can spray it with the factory paint + sealant/clear. Boom, perfect, and this should cost less than $100.

The E/F450-650 aren't pickups either, they're quite long and are considered boxed frame medium sized commercial trucks.

Anyways, just saying, those things suck to drive, It's not surprising someone misjudged the distances and scratched someone's car, sucks for you though.

The bumper guard doe indeed pop out, with the right tools, and is replaceable. You'll probably need to go to a dealership for OEM parts and repainting though. From what it sounds like, doesn't look like itll need replacement, you could just do a little bit of repainting and buff work, but it might get expensive, really depends on how much it bothers you though.

it was one of these suckers... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/78/Triaxle_dump_truck_2005-10-06.km.jpg

I think I am just going to try to fix it myself. I am not even going to find out how much that piece is.

I seem to attract idiotic drivers.

I wasn't planning to call insurance anyway, I already pay too much 🙁

I am not trying to do a full restore... just make it less visible. We'll see how I do... It's the vinyl piece, not the actual bumper so stripper is probably a bad idea.

Come to think of it I am not even sure the truck itself did the damage, might just be the mud caked on his bumper scraping my car.

Any time you get into a problem with a company truck, always, always, write down their plate number and info, which includes company, truck #, date and time. My dad is a truck instructor and he works for the ministry, he knows how to own these idiots and make sure they never sit behind a wheel ever again.

You can always call the head office and file a complaint and they can cover repairs outside of insurance etc. I wouldn't personally call insurance cause you probably have a deductible etc, and any incident looks bad on your record.

I feel your pain man, I drive on the 401 every day from Mississauga to TO and literally avoid accidents on a daily basis. Today I almost got crushed by a 18 wheeler truck switching into the same lane I was switching into.

A Ford F-650 is a class 6/7 truck. The dump truck pic posted is a class 8 truck. It's only 1 class smaller!

lol

well, found a place online that has the bumper trim for 25 bux, I think I'll just get that, paint it + clear coat it and just replace the piece as opposed to trying to make the piece look better.

Completely forgot, you can use this site:
http://www.car-part.com/

You might be able to find it for cheap in your car's color. I've used it plenty of times before and the website, though not user friendly, is a very valuable source of information.
