ffdshow mpeg-4 video decoder movie

I've got a movie in .avi (file size 479 MB) but media player only plays a dark blacked out film that seems to be playing. I've got the latest version of media player and all the updates. I don't know what's wrong. The properties in the movie say it is using ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder. I have that ffdshow decoder which also comes with a property window that has a lot of different settings. Am I supposed to change any of the settings? Has anyone ever had this problem?

The movie file in media player gives the following information:
Movie Type: .avi
Frame width 352 pixels
Frame height 288 pixels
Play length 3748.320 seconds
Frame count 93708
Frame rate 25.00 frames/second
Data rate 130.890 kb/second
Video Sample size 24 bit
Video compression DivX codec

So you have sound but no picture? Do you have the Divx codec installed? If the answer to the first question is yes, I'd say the answer to second is no. Get the Divx bundle. You'll have the option to install the player or codec or both, you don't need the player, unless you want it.

When you look at the video properties of a movie in VirtualDub, it will tell you exactly what version of the Divx codec you need, WMP is pretty stupid. The above will install the latest which should play all previous versions. Sound with no picture is usually a sign of the wrong codec version.
