I know. But people like their customizablility.

I was sick of their not being a good guide when I configured mine. Then I found the one on AVS forums and just decided to expand on that.

Great guide, except it left out one thing: how to stop your system from spawning like a dozen instances of ffdshow when running Oblivion.

hehe. Thats the audio decoder right? (the blue icon in the taskbar?)
Not sure how to stop that though.

I completely disable FFDSHOW's audio decoder. I only use it for video.

FFDshow has an option (under "Info&Debug") where you can disable it from loading when requested from certain EXEs. Add Oblivion's EXE to that list under audio decoder options.

FFDShow was great, but why bother? Nvidia Pure video is just as good, and without the hassles of setup.

Can nvidia Purevideo resize the image as well as ffdshow???

Yes, the optimizations are great, but I still don't think there as good.
Plus ffdshow gives you a massive amount of settings to tweak to your liking.

Nvidia gives you 3.
2 of which you change from 0-100%.
Yes, it's simple, but it doesn't come close to ffdshow, IMO.

Ok, I got rid of VLC Media Player in favor of using this guide (Excellent job wizboy!!). However, how do I tell WMP to use the specified Video Decoder? I'm trying to play the .avi (I believe they are encoded in XVID) but they just come out in black and white for some reason.

Use MPC (Media Player Classic)
comes with CCCP.

This guide seems to be geared towards DVD. What about divx/xvid videos, or HD content? I suppose the latter won't even need to be resized. In any case, a 3X along with blur/NR would need quite a fast CPU.

what to do with AVIVO in CCC for x1950pro?
do I have to disable 3:2 detection and deinterlacing?
I'm interesting to watch DVD (480i/p), xvid/divx, HD 1080i and 1080p on 1080p LCD

what would be the right setup for that?

It depends on who you want to do the deinterlacing.
Either way I think it's gonna be done in software mode (so no hardware acceleration).

Disable the 3:2, and leave the deinterlacing on IF IT WORKS for you.
If not then you can disable that too and just use the 5-tap low pass deinterlacer in ffdshow.

The guide is a bit out of date. I learned a little more since I wrote it but it's still a good general thing to follow.

You can also fix the issue of Oblivion opening numerous instances of ffdshow by disabling MP3 acceleration in the audio properties of ffdshow.

Each time Oblivion loads an MP3 file for playback, it will trigger the opening of an instance of ffdshow to play it back if ffdshow is set as the default filter for MP3.
