The actual program comes up but it won't connect to any sites. IE is running without issue. Is there a way to repair FF? I don't have admin privileges on the machine.

In Firefox go to:

Tools, Options, Network, Advanced, Settings

See if you can set the network connections to Auto Detect

There's no option for just network connections, only for proxies. I tried everything but the manual. No go.

I was able to reinstall FF, didn't help.

Also when I close FF, the process doesn't die. I need to kill it to open the next window.

Try setting it to "No Proxy" ... if you can't or the option is not there, then your IT has locked it down.

I've tried all the different proxy settings. They've just pushed a new patch for windows, let's see if a reboot helps.

Still doesn't work. The only other thing I can think of is installing Matlab yesterday.

Try disabling all of your plugins then exit and restart?

Was it a legal copy of Matlab? If not, it might have come with a free bonus.

All plug-ins are disabled. The first time I restarted after that I got to my homepage but then it lost connection again and has not come back.

The Matlab was legit but it wasn't a standard install, it was done by remotely by some automated cental service.

Seems to be a network/firewall issue. i can connect to the local site just not anything external. Seems I'll need a help ticket. Thanks for the suggestions.

If Internet Explorer goes fine to external sites, it is not a network issue. You may need to add Firefox to the Exceptions list on the computers firewall. You can try to do this by Right Click on the Network Icon, Change Firewall Settings, Exceptions, Add Program

can't block traffic by browser? I don't have rights to set the firewall. I have a ticket in though.

It may be possible in which case, the IT dept or the bosses have decided Firefox is not a good browser for your use. Try Google Chrome and see how that works. Very customizable, like Firefox, light on system resources and loads most pages very fast.

IT guys are currently stumped. Does FF use all the same network settings as IE to get to the web?

Yes, it does. Have IT take a look at the Host file. Maybe it is corrupt. Another option would be to completely remove Firefox and all it's registry keys and folders. Reboot, then have the program reinstalled from a user account which has full administrator rights. That should get it working. Also does your office use a Proxy Server ??? If it does, the program may be being blocked in it.

Alright, I uninstalled Firefox and installed FF 3.xx and it worked. I then upgraded it to FF12 and it worked.. for awhile. Then same thing happened. Now I'm running FF11, we'll see how this works out.

So FF11 also craps out. But if I open FF3 and then close and then open 11, it works. So it has to be something with the install. FF still hangs up sometimes when I close it and I need to kill the process before I can open another one. When it was working I had IT close the ticket. Guess I can just use this workaround for now.

Strange. You need to uninstall it, run CCleaner in admin mode (including the registry clean up) and reinstall after that. See what happens.

Also, see if FF works in Safe Mode with networking.
