Hi all,

I was looking for a bit of advice on a upgrade really, hope someone can help 🙂

as of now i have
e6400 2.7ghz on stock fan
asus p5q board
hd4850 (soon to be hd4890)
4gb 800 ram
win 7 RC

I want to upgrade my cpu but unsure wether to buy a new board and get i7 processor or e8400 or q8400/9400. ive read different things in different places like most games only use 2 cores so its not worth getting quad but becnhmarks tend to vary.

cheers 😱

Lots of people say if you aren't going to use 3 GPU's an i7 will not be much better than a Q9xx0 rig... If you do heavy encoding, an i7 will cut the time down on your encoding, but as for games, its not that much better...

In the (very) near future when gpus are 50-100% faster it might be nice to have the headroom.

Why not maximize what you already have and overclock your e6400 to the limit? It would be able to run 4890 in its sleep. In the process it would save you some cash.

Thanks for your replys, I will buy a new heatsink and try to get it stable at 3.4ghz.

Cheers for the info guys!

Get one that can be adapted for i7, just in case. 😉
