few questions guys....

ddr2 is different to ddr obviously? i bought ddr2 today but my systems a ddr so it wouldnt fit obviously, but is ddr2 better? just for the ddr equivalent, ddr is double the price down here.

also...im not sure how dual channel memory works because i have dual channel setup and put another 512 stick in (i originally had 2X512 in dual channel), and when i put these in, my systems total memory went down to 512 instead of going up by 512. why is this?

many thanks

Probably because the "another" memory was not compatible. There's much more to memory compatibility that just fitting in the slots.
Without knowing anything about your setup or anything about what you are trying to accomplish a more concrete answer is ...well, incompatible!

Try posting your system specs (in your signature would be a good place).

thanks for that. i have a a8v with 512 pc2700 i think it was (cant remember its been so long since i built it) running in dual channel. the memory i was putting in is a pc2100. its out of an old compaq computer, but its made by samsung. i got my figures wrong sorry, i have 512 in total (2 x 256 in dual channel) and was adding another 256. it seems by adding the 256, the dual channels just stopped working and it just used the one that i added....

Ok, here's the deal, Let's make this easy........
You link to the motherboatd's specs, the memory's specs, tell me which modules are in which slots, link to screenies of your BIOS memory settings and I won't have to be "guessing" at a solution for you.

With the info you have provided, pulling a rabbit out of a hat would be easier that diagnosing what's going on with your PC
