Few Questions on DVD-RWs

Im thinking about picking up one finally, I think its been long enough. Im looking at the Nec 3540A right now. They are so cheap now, I dont have a reason not to get one. Im still stuck in my old ways of burning cds...

What kind of dvds are best? (+ or -) Is there any difference?

What brand of dvds should I get, and from where?

What software do you use to complie and burn dvds?

Anything else I should know?

DVD+Rs are newer but aren't "better' than DVD-R. DVD+RW drives can basically read/write all types. Brands dont make a difference to me. Use Nero.

I know brands don't make a difference to alot of people but to me the make a big difference. I would not recomend memorex dvd's because you never know what you are going to get since they just buy the cheapest ones they can. The last 50 pack of memorex I bought was ritek r03 and they are pretty good but the ones i bougth at bestbuy yesterday are cmc magnetics,(BAD). The first one i burnt had a defect in it that look almost like a finger print. THe second one however was OK. I'll have to see what the rest look like.
The two best brands from what i have seen are Tiayo Yuden and Verbatim. Other decent brands are Fuji and Ridata.
The best deal I have seen recently is on some verbs from newegg. I would have bought them but I really needed some dvd's yesterday and couldn't wait for them to be shipped so I had to go to bestbuy and got the Memorex because their verbs where 40 bucks for a 50pack.

I just got a 10 pack of DVD+RW (Maxell) and they had a Philips media ID. So far I've had no issues with burning or playback. My drive is an NEC 3500.

"There appears to be no physical, and little functional, difference between the DVD-R/-RW discs and the DVD+R/+RW discs. The DVD-R ("dash? R) and -RW media are officially approved by the group called DVD Forum, and the DVD+R ("plus? R) and +RW are not. The DVD+R/+RW media are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.

I always try to get bundles they seem to be the best value.

Nero is the best, Alcohol 120% is decent but excellent for ISOs.

The main difference seems to lie in the DVDs' built-in defects management, the way they can be formatted and, of course, their price."

bigal40 is only 8x fast enough and are Verbatim always good guaranteed? Is this the same for DVD+RW and DVD-RW DVDs?

The only dif IMO, is that burners seem to add features and more speed toward the DVD+. Like when D/L burning came out it was only for +, then much much later it came out for the -. I personally prefer the DVD- as my old $1200 Pioneer DVD/LD player has no probs playing - but sometimes has issues playing + media.
