Few Questions Concerning My System Functionallity

Hi,

I recently finished building my system and it doesn't work how it should taking into consideration the components I have installed. To begin with, I have built my computer for Music Production and Audio Editing which means I need good CPU, Memory and Audio Interface, as the Graphics Card is a whatever for me. Briefly, here are my specs: Mobo: Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R, CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E8400, Memory: A dual channel pair of Corsair XMS2 DHX (4 GB, 800Mhz), GPU: ASUS En7300GT (512DDR2), OS: Windows XP x64, PSU: Raidmax 520W,HD (this is an old one): Seagate ST380817AS (80GB, 7200RPM, 8MB) and an external WDH1CS5000E HD. I wont refer to the audio interface as I doubtlessly know it isn't the cause of my problems. I've made and uploaded an Everest Report for a full list of specs: http://download.yousendit.com/3700B134045DD4E6

I recently made a 3Dmark06 test and I shamefully got a poor 1842 score and as if it wasn't enough, today when I turned the computer on my mouse was moving in flashes on the screen and the sound was playing with interruptions (at the same time when the mouse was freezing). Luckily, it disappeared after a reboot, but thats not all: During playback, in my DAW (audio software) I get those interruptions again (in sound and flow) especially when I move parameters and sequences around and the CPU meter shows values like 250-400% during the interruptions (lasts only few milliseconds).

One more thing which I don't understand is that CPUID shows me only 2000 MHz Core Speed, at a x6 multiplier and only 400Hz at the memory.

I am completely confused as all my components are new, except for the hard drive which I personally think it is cause of my issues.

It seems that it's pretty much to read but for those who take their time, I would be amazingly grateful to get a response back.

Thanks in advance,

* Tell us what audio interface option you chose.
* Are you attempting any OCing?

I have an Hercules Dj Console at 24-bit and 48000. It's not professional but it worked like a charm. I am pretty sure it's not the cause of my problems because I didn't get these issues on my previous junk system (512 DDR400, Intel P4 3Ghz). On my previous system, the OS was installed on an other HD (an old IDE Wester Digital), which I gave it to my brother.

I don't run any OC and don't want to, as I need full stability.

Hope it helps

Most likely, CPUID shows your multiplier as 6x due to power-saving features being active. You could turn them off, but there's really no reason to. When your computer needs the resources it will unlock the full speed of the chip.

As you're noticing the slowdowns, do you hear any noises coming from the hard drive? Clicking? Grinding? Bloodcurdling screams?

Didn't I write about the grindings? Oh, I got over it.

To all intents and purposes, I do hear that type of screams every time I encounter those interruptions. I also hear the screams every time I open folder and minor things like that. It grinds even when I close a window. It's frustrating!

Could be the hard damaged or could be there an incompatibility as it is SATA 1 and not SATA 2 ?

Incompatibility wouldn't cause mechanical noises as far as I know. Anyhow, the two standards should be compatible.

Sounds to me like it's time to try a new hard drive. A good one is $100 or less, and you'd get much greater capacity anyway.
