drip irrigation is less susecptible to evaporation, ie less water lost to evaporation, more of the water is delivered to the soil surrounding the plant, therefore, it takes less water using drip irrigation than other "standard" delivery system, such as sprinkler systems
also, since drip irrigation is delivered more accurately to the plants root system, less water is used because you aren't watering the entire area, ie the soil that doesn't contain the crop doesn't get directly watered, it a directed delivery system, where a sprinkler system is just watering the entire surface area of the field

drip irrigation works extremely well on crops like grapes or fruit trees that are perenials (and are more distinct individual plants), in a field of wheat , its a little more difficult to use
