hi everyone, hoping for a little help. i recieved a rma 20 Gb harddrive from maxtor three days ago in replacement of one that went bad (different computer). last night i was playing an mp3 set and when i came back into the room the mp3 was just skipping over and over in the same spot. the monitor had went black in power saving mode and no button combination would bring the screen back so i turned off the computer. well now the computer does not see the harddrive in bios. i have plugged and replugged in all the cables and still no go. is this harddrive messed up as well? it would really piss me off to have to wait for another replacement. anyone have any idea what is wrong with it or how it can be fixed? thanks.

Yeah, I have had cables to just die on me. Two in the last year to be exact. Try to reset the cmos and see if that resets everything where the bios will pick it up again. I have had to do this before on older motherboards. Hope that helps.

i guess my next question (i am sitting at work right now and my computer is at home) would be about the skipping mp3. would the cable die when the computer was running and a mp3 was playing off the harddrive? also, i haven't mentioned this, but the harddrive that doesn't work is slave to a small harddrive that contains my operating system. it still works (that is, bios sees it and it will boot to windows). if the cable was bad then wouldn't both harddrives not work? thanks for the replies, keep them coming please. beatniks3

Yeah, if one works and the other does not that is very weird indeed. I would try to hook the dead one up as master and see if it would work. If it does not then I would say it was dead too. Thanks.

i called maxtor and they said to run a test program that they have on it. the guy on the phone sounded like he thought it was a bad harddrive. looks like i might get to do some more waiting. how fun.

The maxtor utility will let them know whats wrong with it.
it will spit out a code if its bad.
had a few maxtors do this to me.

Good luck.

Shawn.
