I never said they would have only 10 000 boards. What I said is that to expect massive amounts of available cards to be on the market in early April is stupidity when even dear leader himself said that production would only ramp up ''next quarter'' ( I think it starts near the end of next month)

We shall see. I think they will have plenty of cards in April, it's May I'm worried about.:(

I hope they crank out 100,000 so I can get a high end card a little cheaper.

Edit: In a crazy sort of way we ALL should be pulling for a fast Fermi so we can have some good old competition and some decent prices for a change. I just looked on newegg and the cheapest 5850 is 315$ and the cheapest 5870 is up to 427$. That totally sucks for all of us.

The more they can sell the better. If dx11 uptake is big, future games will use more dx11 features and use it better. A pricewar doesn't concern me as i've already bought my 5850s, and it runs incredibly fast with huge OC ability.

I think you're on the right track. But all that is already here. Just hidden.

I just wish we could stick more to debating merits and tech details of cards etc instead of this turning into a marketing debate constantly. I mean....who gives 2 shakes whether their is 10k or 100k cards at launch? If I tell you that I am the CEO of Nvidia and I tell you that I have 1 million cards ready to ship each with 512 shader cores at 750mhz, and I take a picture of the warehouse of pallets, and have underwriter labs certify the speeds, what changes from right now? Really, what changes? We cant buy them, we cant touch them, we just have to wait and see. Besides, do the type of people on this forum really buy tech products without at least seeing some benchmarks and final prices?

Anyways, I feel like I am back in an MBA marketing class where Rush Limbaugh sits on one side of me, Michael Moore is on the other side and the class is being taught by Jesse Jackson. Nobody, and I mean nobody, wants to be in that room, especially me, stuck in the middle.

You guys should give Keys a break. What is the big idea about being in focus group? Well, at least Keys can share some first hand news whenever s/he can. If there are some ATI focus group member here, we can also have the first hand news on that side too. Having said that, trolling Keys isn't going to drive Nvidia to hell, but Keys him/herself. That won't make the Keys look bad, but those who attacks him/her for no particular reason other than blindly being a fanboy.

Suppose Nvidia's Fermi rocks, it may hurt ATI's sells, but not the customer of ATI. They will still get support, and will be able to enjoy games and stuffs. In fact, if it does rock, then ATI will adjust its price and Fermi will cost your arms and legs for it just to release another Fermi at the end of the year. By then, the price of all other video cards must be adjusted. While this is bad for vendor who stock up goods, it doesn't hurt us, as customer at all.

Suppose Fermi sucks, it may hurt Nvidia, but Nvidia video cards won't just suddenly breaks, kill your PC, or suddenly make all ATI card work twice as fast. People are still free to choose their purchase.

Seriously, video card is not tattoos. Ditch it whenever you like. Your PC won't fuse to a video card in anyway so don't worry. If you have brought a new card, then enjoy it. If not, wait a bit for the price adjustment.

You must not have used one of the recent drivers... ;)

Waitaminute. Did you just say "dear leader"? I don't know if that was a slip or not, but I know only one other person who uses that phrase. Anyone else want to fill in this blank?

And nice sig BTW. I see you joined the forum with an agenda. That's been going on a lot lately.

Ok, so, do you know how many 5xxx boards has ATI shipped since it's launch to date?

And you're already here with one, so what's the difference?

He has been a member since 2000. A shill accusing someone else of having an agenda? Priceless...

EDIT: On reflection, I am as guilty as anyone else of dragging this thread off topic  My personal opinions don't help anyone.

On topic, let everyone who wants cheaper graphics cards unite in hoping that the positive rumours about Fermi are true, and that it will be readily available at a competitive price point at launch or close to. You can't argue against that desire from anyone's performance and value perspective!

Ah, that's good Dug. You filled in the blank.

I have to admit that I am entirely confused by that comment?

EDIT: if you are talking about my previous post, on reflection I was being rather hypocritical, and certainly not furthering anyone's understanding of the cards or the rumours...

Uh huh. So are you calling me out using your sig then? That's kind of what it looks like to me seeing how I'm the only FG member here.

No I would never call you out specifically as I have nothing against you personally. Anyways calling out specific people is against the rules anyways.

Now that's just lame. Anandtech really needs to take a good hard look at who they have "leading" and representing their community.

Back on topic, were manufacturing and supply issues with Fermi ever fixed as far as yield issues go? The HD5800 parts were scarce on launch because TSMC had so many problems with its 40nm process. That is, it wasn't a chip design problem, but more a problem with the manufacturer. Once TSMC stepped up it's game, supply issues were solved. However, if 40nm production has been Fermi-focused for the last few weeks to build a reserve to meet demand at launch, what happens once that reserve is depleted? Granted this is a highly circumstantial supply/demand argument, but I think it's something to consider, especially when looking at long-term market trends (which really affect prices).

So let me ask this... if there's a huge launch demand just as there was with the 5800 series... where does that put the actual street price for the GTX480 if it's MSRP is supposed to be $499? Talk about a scary thought!

If you want an answer to that I suggest shopping around for a 5970... if you can even find one.

Well, the last time a hotly anticipated item launched when its cheaper direct competitor had a decent amount of lead time to market at ~$499 was the PS3 so that might give you some idea... :D

So half the cards are going to end up on ebay for 200$ over MSRP?
