Fender bender vs Hit and run

A fender bender is a small tap where two cars hit, and bend a fender.
A hit and run (ala GTA) is where a person is hit (and often killed) by a car.

I just hate the term hit and run being used when people mean fender bender (mainly because a relative was killed by a hit and run driver).
Maybe it's because I'm British.

It doesnt only refer to hitting a person... any incident where the guilty party leaves the scene can be called a hit and run!

Hit and Run (at least around my way) refers to a car hitting something and then running away. It doesn't have anything to do with what/who was hit or the extent of damage, just that the guilty party fled the scene.
