UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - UN chief Kofi Annan said the world is ready for a female secretary general of the United Nations as women across the globe marked International Women's Day with calls for greater political power.

"There are now 11 women heads of state or government, in countries on every continent. And three countries -- Chile, Spain and Sweden -- now have gender parity in government," Annan told the Commission on the Status of Women.

"I think we should see a clear message," Annan said. "The world is ready for a woman as secretary general of the United Nations."

Annan, who will step down in December after ten years as secretary general, spoke shortly before he was scheduled to meet with Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the only woman contender for the position.

 That would be nice...

Just look at England for example, they've had female leaders throughout it's history, I don't think a woman leader is in any way differant from a male leader.

I think there are differences and that is what would make it more interesting having a female chief for the UN or a female leader in general.

I think a person should be picked based on merit, not on gender. If that woman has the best qualifacations by all means pick her.
Btw, I've always seemed to like Kofi.

Apart from the fact that their ex female PM is obviously insane i agree.

Picking someone simply because they're a woman is plain stupid. Pick the most qualified person, regardless of race, gender, creed, etc...

Why would you say she is insane? Admittedly I know very little about Margaret Thatcher other than a rough idea of her economic stance (which I would say is spot on).
