Female Friend Wants An Apple Laptop

She says cost is not a concern, so the "buy a PC" doesn't apply here. She has a PC at home, but definitely wants to take this opportunity to transition to the wonderful, pristine and serene world of Apple. 😉

Situation: She's out in Oklahoma right now attending to her dad, who's dying of cancer and is in a hospice. He's a lawyer, and wants to dictate a bunch of legal forms to her, while teaching her those legal ropes.

I don't know how much "cost is not object", just that the higher cost of an Apple is not a factor.

She wants me to recommend her an Apple lappy. I'm lazy. I'm guessing a Macbook Pro, but not an Air. I'm guessing portability is not a huge factor with her (i.e., in future daily life she won't be tethered to this), so a 15" screen vs. a 13"? I'm guessing she doesn't need the extra cost of the retina display. 8GB main memory. SSD vs. HD, or both?

She'll be more of a civilian day tripper - e-mail, word processing, watching vids -- than a developer or vid processor.

Anyway, OT Apple gurus, spec out your recommendations for me!

As an aside, WHY do so many of my female friends with an extra dollah with which to hollah flock to Apple so determinedly?

If cost is no object, have her get one of the Retina display models. The screen is truly nice to look at and if she gets the applecare package, then she won't have to worry about monkeying around with it when it comes time to change the battery (the batteries are sealed inside the case).

17" macbook air.

those things own and will probably be my next laptop i purchase.

i find it amusing that it bothers you she wants an apple. i also find it kind of sad.

I agree, if you're going to spring the $$$ for a Mac in the first place, you should get the high-end model.

Personally, I'd go with a 13" non retina MBP that way you can swap out the optical drive with another hard drive and have more storage (Do SSD for the initial hard drive and swap the optical with a large standard drive). In my opinion, 13" is the money spot as far as size goes, anything bigger is too big (again, in my opinion). The 13" rMBP is nice, but you are limited in options as far as storage goes.

13" MBP Retina.

I'm not an Apple guy at all, but I was left drooling during the product launch. If only I had a huge wad of disposable income, truly disposable.

We have a 11" Macbook Air at home and it's pretty fantastic - the 13" model is what I would have gone with if it was for me personally. I doubt most people need the extras the Pro series gives you.

Tell her to go to the Apple store, and buy what she likes the look of. A netbook would serve her hardware needs, so it comes down to appearance and price.

You are doing a lot of guessing for someone that is suppose to be recommending something. I would tell her to find an Apple store and discuss her needs with them to get a recommendation.

Wanted a plethora of quick responses, so I put this in OT. I will now use my omnipotence to move it to the Apple forum, and also to remotely infect the nagging wag complainers with the ebola virus, for I am that all powerful . . . in my fervid imagination, anyway.
