My daughter had 5 of her friends over last night to work on a project for their college art class. I asked if they have voted yet (all are 19 to 20 years old) and none of them had registered to vote. I asked why and they said it wasn't a Presidential election so why bother. I wonder how many people that are their age and feel the same way.

She's right, of course. But, it's only half the truth; most young men shouldn't be voting, either. I would say that if you actually gave a basic questionnaire to those involved in any political election you'd find an essential level of ignorance in more than half of them insofar as a basic knowledge of what they are voting for or against.

What makes them really stupid is that because they don't vote, politicians don't give a damn what they think. Politicians look towards demographics then tailor their shpeal around the numbers that help them win. But because most young people don't vote, no point in courting them. Fuck their issues. You should always vote, even if you know you can't win.

Only adult male Athenian citizens who had completed their military training as ephebes had the right to vote in Athens. The percentage of the population that actually participated in the government was 10 to 20% of the total number of inhabitants, but this varied from the fifth to the fourth century BC.[12] This excluded a majority of the population:slaves, freed slaves, children, women and metics (foreigners resident in Athens).[15] The women had limited rights and privileges and were barely considered citizens. They had restricted movement in public and were very segregated from the men.

If you are familiar with the history of democracy, you know that women voting is a relatively recent phenomenon...

But you would rather send them to war to fight for your security, right? I have a feeling that you are rather enthusiastic about such matters.

Plus, what kind of basic knowledge do you have in mind for voter qualification? Math? Civics? Ethics? English? Philosophy? History? Politics? Law? Engineering? Science? Medicine? Art? How about plumbing?

Who should devise the test?

Can you see if you pass an actual test that was administered to certain population in the U.S.? (scroll down to see PDF. Note the time limit = 10 min. and one wrong answer = sorry no voting right for you)

What would you count as "property?"

(lol I have no intention of opening this pandora's box here.)

He means land, like it used to be in the days before you cast off your imperialist overlords and became one nation, indivisible, with freedom and happiness for all.

That test is crazy. Forget getting one wrong, just completing that in 10 minutes is insane. You get 20 seconds a question.

Actually I think everyone should vote, then they will feel a little more betrayed by the lies and broken promises and maybe actually hold some of their own accountable.

I don't often agree with you, but here's another one that I do agree with in the sense that once feeling betrayed, a voter will tend to be a lot more informed and prepared to vote the next time around.

When we were helping the people in the assisted living home get voter IDs and register to vote. Due to their age they qualified to vote by mail however, none wanted to do this and opted to go vote in person. You could see/tell by their demeanor after voting that they very proud to go cast their vote. It's a shame many young voters do not feel they have any civic obligation to vote.

So you get the automatic pre-emptive weasel, right?

Pretty much

I'd vote if I could do it online. It's just too much of a hassle to go to the polling station to cast a vote into a broken system anyway.

You should qualify that statement with this crowd. I don't want to put words in your mouth but for starters I bet you would only want them to vote once per election and I'm betting you only want citizens of this nation who have reached voting age to vote too. Perhaps to vote in the district they are registered in would also be important. You may have other qualifiers you want to add.

Why vote when all elections are rigged by money if you don't have money yourself? People don't vote because they don't see viable options. You can vote for swill or fuck.

They made a valid and sensible choice. The whole "get out and vote" routine is stupid. Don't vote unless you're going to actually put out the effort of understanding what you're voting for. If that means that only six people vote in an election, I'm fine with that, as long as they are a well informed six people.

The fundamental problem with democracy is the belief that you can increase a sum by adding zeros. It doesn't work. A million ignorant people aren't going to make better choices than ten ignorant people.
