The picture is still around Twitter, with the #nudephotorevolutionary.

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Egyptian blogger Aliaa Magda Elmahdy has become a household name in the Middle East and sparked a global uproar after a friend posted a photo of her naked on Twitter.

The photo, which the 20-year-old former student first posted on her blog, shows her naked apart from a pair of thigh-high stockings and some red patent leather shoes.

It was later posted on Twitter with the hashtag #nudephotorevolutionary. The tweet was viewed over a million times, while Elmahdy's followers jumped from a few hundred to more than 14,000.

Her actions have received global media coverage and provoked outrage in Egypt, a conservative Muslim country where most women wear the veil. Many liberals fear that Elmahdy's actions will hurt their prospects in the parliamentary election next week.

Elmahdy describes herself as an atheist. She has been living for the past five months with her boyfriend, blogger Kareem Amer, who, in 2006 was sentenced to four years in a maximum security prison for criticizing Islam and defaming former president Hosni Mubarak.

Here she talks exclusively to CNN in Cairo about why she posed nude.

Its an interesting interview to read. I really hope some jackass doesn't attack her or dose her with acid.

One note about this is the nationalistic aspect -

There was a time this could get you in jail in the US. At that time, I suspect some would say "we in the US don't allow this, we have values!"

Now, when we have the liberal laws and create much of the world's porn, the same people's response is, "we have more freedom, freedom is a value here!"

One other note - it's not that easy to appreciate other cultures at times.

They and we both have our share of myopia and hypocrisy and probably some poor choices culturally.

It it interesting though that 'freedom seems to be blossoming more' there nowadays.

Change is almost always met with some opposition; when we had freedom riders challenge de facto segregation, they were met with mobs who assaulted them.

When you could be thrown in jail in the US for posing nude? I don't recall any acid attacks on nude models or porn stars in the US either. Not to say we don't have our own stupidity though.

I'm at work. Is she hot?

Just the headshot is on the CNN link. That's all I've looked at.

If the rest of the package was there, I wouldn't mind looking. Not drop-dead gorgeous but worth a look before she's either dead or takes an acid bath.

I hope she is able to leave the country before the Mooselums stone her or cut her head off.

Trust Craig to defend any group that hates the United States. If they are evil now, he must always point out when we did bad things.

Curiously that doesn't seem to work both ways.

Meh. Worth a look just 'cause it's easy to find, but you won't be inspired to carve her likeness into granite. Doable though, especially in Egypt.

Sadly, in that crazy intolerant muslim culture, she'll be dead, disfigured or jailed in short order. Individual freedom and islam can not coexist.

For all the Egyptian boys interested in female anatomy lessons, making nude photos of Aliaa Magda Elmahdy freely available on the web beats going to a public library and doing the research.

As for Egyptian females, its hardly a revelation because they too have the same standard equipment.

As for the social shock damage to Egyptian social mores, small minds exist to be blown.
Aliaa Magda Elmahdy may be one of the first, but there are likely to be far more in the future.

I am sure, Egypt will somehow get over it. And also, like all societies, including ours in the USA, other social mores will get increasingly challenged.

Get a real phone. :p

But yes, she is quite the looker. Far beyond anything that AT posters are capable of getting.

She's reasonably attractive, but more importantly, extremely courageous. In the interview she says she intends to remain in Egypt. I hope she keeps safe.

That is until some magazines around here get around to giving her an offer for a photo-shoot with gobs of moola. Of which they will air brush the heck out of, but still she has something decent to start with. After making said moola, she won't stay there.

Of course this assumes the crazies in Egypt don't get to her first.

I bet she can claim political refugee and immigrate to US.

Dear Arab ladies, get your US citizenship by getting naked!*
