A split-second decision killed Relic lead designer Brian Wood but saved his pregnant wife.

ZoomRelic Entertainment lead designer Brian Wood was killed Friday in an auto accident that took place in Washington state. Wood's wife of five years, Erin Wood, said that he made a split-second decision to maneuver the car just before impact so that she would live to give birth to their first child.

Wood was driving their 2004 Subaru Outback to the family home on Whidbey Island when an out-of-control 1994 Chevy Blazer came bearing down the highway. To avoid a head-on collision and minimize the damage, Wood slammed on the brakes and turned a sharp right so that the oncoming car would slam into the driver's side of the vehicle.

"All the policeman say that if we had hit the car head-on all of us would be dead," Erin Wood said. "At the very last second (Brian) braked really hard and turned right so that he would be put in the path of the SUV and not me and the baby, and that is the only thing that saved us both."

The Chevy Blazer, carrying four occupants, crossed over the center line when the driver tried to remove her sweater--the other front seat passenger took control of the wheel. When Wood braked and swerved, the Chevy Blazer plowed over the Subaru and crushed the roof with its wheels. Using the Subaru as a makeshift ramp, the SUV launched into the air, landed on its roof, and then rolled back over onto its wheels.

Although Wood was killed, his wife didn't emerge unscathed--she received a non-life-threatening head injury. Two passengers in the rear of the SUV--both not wearing seat belts--were killed, and the passenger suffered a broken pelvis. The driver is currently in custody awaiting formal charges of three counts of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular assault. Both the driver and passenger are under investigation related to drug use.

As for the baby, it's still on track for a November 5 appointment, unharmed by the accident.

"I am not quite sure how I am supposed to live the rest of my life without [Brian]," Erin Wood said. "He truly was a gift and I wouldn’t change a thing of any of our moments together. (The baby is) due Nov. 5 so it will come quick and then I look forward to seeing little glimpses of Brian in our baby and that gives me a lot of strength right now."

Brian Wood was known for his work on the Company of Heroes series.

Nice story, but I doubt his idea was to move her out of danger and sacrifice himself. More likely he was just reacting the way most of us would which is to try and move out of the way.

Either way it is sad. Hope the driver gets a LONG time to think about what they did.

leave it to PJ - to A - stereotype women drivers, and B - downplay what may have been a man's instinctive move to keep his wife and child out of harm's way as much as possible.

You have no idea what made him act the way he did, leave it at that.

B I can see, but where's A?

Wow sad :( Its amazing how quick life can be taken away and how little people comprehend that.

I think he was confusing Narmer and ProfJohn though I agree for Narmer it's par for the course. Of course it had to be a woman driver that got high and killed someone. You'd never see a man driving under the influence and killing people. Nobody here ever heard of anything like that *cough**cough*.

I think the woman deciding to take off her sweater and letting the other woman take the wheels was the primary reason why they crashed. They lost control after that happened.

Intoxicated driving strikes again.
SUV driving strikes again.
Young drivers strike again.
Moron driving strikes again.

Not really fair to play the "female driver" card, in my opinion. Too many other factors involved.

Exactly. Plus who could imagine a sweater replacing the usual suspect the cell phone?

Drying hair, cutting nails, painting nails, painting toenails falls under which of these categories?

Yesterday my drive home from work was extended out by at least 10 minutes by a slow moving SUV at a critical point where 2 highways meet right by a very busy exit ramp. There was a line of traffic at least a mile long behind the SUV which made for a dangerous situation because cars could merge like normal.

When I finally got passed the SUV, all was explained. Some (ugly) chick was putting on her makeup while driving.

Gotta wonder at the comment about the side impact being better for overall survival, though. I would have thought the Subie would have done very well in a head-on, especially if the other vehicle rode up over the Subie like a ramp. Might have missed the pax compartment altogether with a head-on.

No point in speculating, though.

what a terrible tragedy. regardless of who was behind the wheel, it was a stupid decision to get high and drive. now that child will never know the joys of growing up with his dad and two other families have lost a loved one.
