If you think about it, they probably gave money to hundreds of thousands of people down there and the audit "only" found 1,500 potential cases of fraud. On the whole, that isn't too bad. And as other posters have said, it's not FEMA's fault people waste their money on frivilous things.

Like the times I've seen people buying steak and lobster with food stamps...

Heh...my mother-in-law has people come into her restaurant offering to sell her EBT cards for half price so they can have the cash to spend on whatever they want.

Who says we don't spend enough on welfare?

FEMA really shouldn't be catching heat for this, they need to start tracking down the individuals who defrauded the system and start bringing charges.

While I do take issue with the idea of handing out that much cash they cannot be faulted for how it was spent.

I totally agree.

But the ones who did this should be charged and then held responsible for paying back those funds.

I agree that a large portion of the blame falls on the crooked people that abused the system. But I also believe that FEMA made it way too easy to commit fraud. I mean come on, they sent checks for thirteen bogus claims totaling $139k to the same address😱
And paid claims to prisoners SS#'s, and double paid rent assistance to the person named on claims and directly to hotels for the same claims and SS#'s. They sent claim checks to people who've lived in a totally different part of the country their whole lives, the paid a hotel in Hawai directly for a 70 week stay. And how in the hell did they think the whole debit card idea wouldn't be a fraud pit🙁

A few years back we had a flood and I lost my 78 280z and all my furniture. FEMA came out and evaluated the damage at $15k. I applied for a loan and was denied. So instead they gave me a grant for $12k.

WTF?

I'd rather see fraud charges. They won't likely be able to pay it back anyways.

yeap.

people were screaming that Fema was not acting fast enough to help these people. so the debit card was a band-aid. What did they expect to happen? most that got the cards were not the best financial people around. not a suprise a lot of stories like this are comeing out now. it really would nto suprise me that there are a heck of a lot more and worse.

this is what happens when you give people who are used to hand-outs free money. they blow it on stupid stuff.

Those folks are learning from the best <their own corrupt and incompetence state government>:

Former governor Edwin Edwards and his son are in prison for casino kickback.
The last three insurance commissioners are either in prision or indiced for fraud.
Rep. Jefferson is under investigation for corruption, FBI said they found $90,000 hide in his freezer.
Don't forget Blanco the crying/clueless governor and Nagin the idiot/chocolate major of New Orleans last year with Katrina.

Shall I go on? I hate to say it but Louisiana is the dumbestmost corrupt/poorest state in the US, yet those folks keep electing the same idiots over and over <see Nagin>.
