FEMA director Brown REPLACED with Allen

FEMA director recalled to D.C.

Embattled FEMA Director Michael Brown is being sent back to Washington and a new leader has been picked to handle on-site Hurricane Katrina relief operations, a senior administration official tells CNN. The news came as officials in New Orleans reported that an initial sweep of the city found far fewer bodies than expected.

good. to place the blame all on one person or agency is ignorant, but at least this may shut some screamers up who like to beat this horse to death. whether an honest attempt at fixing things, or political strategy, at least bush is taking steps to fix fema. will he get any credit?

fwiw, fema did a great job down here during ivan and dennis.

i think its safe to assume thats the next step. the admin may just want to keep him around for a while as changing dept heads in the middle of an operation may not be the most efficient way to handle the situation.
 
here's the thing. if you are talking about fixing blame.

IF Bush gets all this credit for how well he handled 9/11, then he should ALSO get the same amount of blame for how New Orleans was handled.

i don't really believe who was in office would have made that big a difference for either scenario, but I find it amusing when people want to give bush credit for 9/11 but not the blame for New Orleans.

plenty of blame for everyone, just as there was plenty of praise during 9/11. blame starts with citizens, all the way up to bush, being unprepared and negligent.

plenty of blame for everyone, just as there was plenty of praise during 9/11. blame starts with citizens, all the way up to bush, being unprepared and negligent.

oh i agree. not wanting to do the blame game thing. obviously getting the people down there taken care of is the first priority.

but bush is going to try and spin this, oh, it should have been state and local, yada yada.

but when that happens (and you see it already from bush apologists) then they have to be made aware.
 
Better this than holding those responsible for his appointment in the first place, whomever they may be, right?

It's funny you should bring up "blame" now as I distinctly remember Brown, whose sole responsibility is to mange and provide relief in an emergency, place blame on the residents of New Orleans. That alone made it pretty obvious this guy was not up to a job of this magnitude.

The thing is, if Bush had appointed a candidate with extensive previous emergency management experience and not some generous political donor, then Bush, although likely still unprepared himself, would have been able to rely on the experience and knowledge of his appointee and thus share less of the ultimate blame or quite possibly even some of the praise.
 
I have a serious question...

If he was considered so unqualified for the job (only handling Arabian horses and stuff), why were there no objections to his appointment from the get go in 2003 instead of right now? It seems to me with FEMA being a pretty important organization that any reservations about his duties/qualifications would have been brought up years ago, and not just when a disaster strikes and everything goes to sh!t.
