Feels like my ankle twisted, didn't physically twist it though...

My left ankle has been bothering me since last night. It's painful and feels like I've twisted it, but I know I haven't physically twisted it. I've been prone to ankle twists my whole life, so this feels like a twist or equivalent pain. Can't put much weight on it, can't walk around comfortably and when I try to stretch it out by rotating or extending my foot, it hurts. I tried elevating it last night, seemed to work ok, but tonight I'm going to try icing it to see if that helps. Other than that, I'm clueless as to what might be going on.

I diagnose you with what is called, "old age."

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor.

It could be gout. I thought I had it myself recently but when I researched the "virtually never happens, right down at the bottom of the list" side effects of the blood pressure medication I'm on I found that ankle pain was on that list.

Well, last night when the pain was most severe it was really weird. Within a matter of 10 mins, I shivered uncontrollably. maybe a shock reaction to the pain, I don't know but I never shiver. Also, I'm diabetic, not sure how that might play into what I'm experiencing. Gout sounds like a winner here though. I'll make an appt with my Dr.

Diabetic Neuropathy.

Have your blood glucoses been out of whack from holiday eating the last couple weeks?

Then this could be it. It can manifest in a myriad of ways from extreme pain, to itching, to numbness.

Gout is usually in the farthest extremities. And the pain would be unbearable if you even breathed on the area.

I used to take Indomethacin but a lot of Ibuprofen would do...

Update: Ankle feels almost 100%. Slight stiffness/soreness, but nothing near what it was the last day and a half. Weird, but I'm still not sure what caused this. Although Cuular might be on the right track:

I did cheat a bit eating some desserts over the weekend I'd normally stay away from. Maybe this was the case as my sugar levels were elevated pretty much from Thursday through yesterday. Back to normal today.

Seconded. I'm not diabetic but I had GBS a while back and had terrible neuropathy from that. Depending on the day my toes, ankles, knees, thighs, etc. would hurt like hell.

OP - Since its an issue with your feet and you are diabetic, get it checked out by a doc. Or should we start calling you "stumpy" now?

Neuropathy can be transient, but it usually isn't. Most of the time its due to nerve damage. E.g., myelin sheath can get all screwed up, causing pins and needles feeling, etc. Takes a while for that stuff to get sorted out. I.e., weeks or months. Not a few days.

Still, I would get it checked out if I were you. Definitely if it comes back.

I've been a diabetic for 47 years, and it strikes me in my outer ankle when I go nuts over holidays. Feels like there's a nail driven into the side of the ankle for a couple days, before it gets back to normal.

At 46, I get the same thing happening for short periods of time in my ankle and sometimes even hip. It happens when I sit around too much but I can usually walk it off pretty quickly.

Yup, as others said: old age kicking your ass one joint at a time. Good luck.
