Feeling screwed by Nikon

I've just got to vent about this!

My wife purchased a 50mm 1.8 lens for my birthday the first of July. On the box was a big gold star with the words 5 YEARS OF PROTECTION INCLUDED. As I have always been I was impressed with Nikon and with a 5 year warranty on my new lens. I've never returned the registration that comes w/ many products because it's not required for the warranty and usually just means you will get a bunch of crap mail. I never looked at the box again until tonight.

I've just discovered that the lens only has a 1 year warranty and that I needed to fill out the form and return it within 10 days of purchase to get the other 4 years. Even if I had looked at the box and noticed this...it was too late already. As most sensible humans do...my wife had bought the gift about a month before and of course she never looked at the box for that kind of info.

I guess we're in the wrong here because she didn't spend time studying the package...but I certainly don't blame her.

Is this normal for Nikon? I haven't bought new camera gear in a long time and maybe this is typical now. It sure seems like a sneaky way to advertise a warranty knowing many well intentioned people will miss it.

Would have been nice for B&H to have made this more clear during ordering so my wife would have caught it.

Bah!!! Just had to vent!

Yeah, sorry to hear that. I'm the type that reads everything in the package, so I sent all that stuff in ASAP. All the Nikkor 5-year warranties are like that, AFAIK. So, once you cave in and buy more Nikkor glass, be sure to send in that card. ;)

 for the 50/1.8. I have one too, and I cherish my plastic fantastic.

i've heard from numerous sources that the 1 + 4 year extended is just a gimmick for marketing purposes and no one has been turned away for not sending it in... People over at nikoncafe who didn't send in their card had no problems getting warranty service 2-3 years after purchase.

You don't need to send in the card, just have the receipt ready or credit card statement and they will repair the lens within the 5years. However, that 50 f/1.8 is nearly indestructible so I doubt you'll need to make use of the warranty.

I agree. They really want to know who owns their lenses so they can send you information about other Nikon products. It's all about marketing.
