Feeling like you are on autopilot

More and more I'm noticing that I go about my life on autopilot. Examples being that when I type there is no cognizant choosing of letters on the keyboard, eating, talking, or driving etc... all simply floats along while I zone out. Sometimes doing things flawlessly, other times (such as typing) where I am horribly inaccurate.
For some tasks I don't mind being able to put things on cruise control, but it makes day to day living seem somewhat empty. Not that my life is dull and meaningless, but just that there are huge gaps of nothingness.
Comments and personal autopilotness?

Chill with the close friends, listen to your favorite music (that wouldn't promote sad thoughts)

Sell all your stuff, quit work and hike through the Australian outback for a few months.
