Feeling like you are on autopilot

More and more I'm noticing that I go about my life on autopilot. Examples being that when I type there is no cognizant choosing of letters on the keyboard, eating, talking, or driving etc... all simply floats along while I zone out. Sometimes doing things flawlessly, other times (such as typing) where I am horribly inaccurate.
For some tasks I don't mind being able to put things on cruise control, but it makes day to day living seem somewhat empty. Not that my life is dull and meaningless, but just that there are huge gaps of nothingness.
Comments and personal autopilotness?

I do it too much when im driving on the freeway, ill snap back to reality and realize ive gone like 10 miles without thinking about anything at all.

need more sleep? the title of this thread reminded me of one of those annoying prescription drug adds... ambien? or some other sleeping pill.
