New Stuff just Ordered:

OEM Opteron 146
EPOX EP-9NPA+ ULTRA Motherboard
Retail HS & Fan from AMD X2 4400+ processor (in my hands from E-bay)
A tube of Arctic Silver 5
EVGA Geforce 7800GT PCIe

Questions:

Can you forsee any problems integrating the new stuff with my old hardware?
Any gotchas I need to look out for?
Should I use the motherboard's built-in sound (Realtek ALC850), or install my old SB Live! value?

Thanks!

Looks nice, you might want to think about some more RAM in the future though. If money is tight then another 2x512 sticks may well help out for gaming.

looks pretty good

You might want to get some better cooling for the GPU and the CPU down the road. the stock 7800GT HSF is noisy. When you get it at least take it off, clean off the old TIM and take off the thermal pads for the ram, and then put a new layer of AS5 on between the GPU and each piece of ram, and the cooler, and then put it back on.

EDIT: Just saw how much ram you are getting. I would highly reccomend getting 2x1GB. Don't get 4x512MB because that lowers the command rate from 1T to 2T, which will deal a big performance blow. Even 2GB of value ram would be just fine.

T2 does not cause a big performance hit, the hit is rather small and unnoticable for the most part and far outweighed by the increased volume of memory. While 2x1gb is better than 4x512 it's not always practical to buy 2x1gb when you can upgrade to 2gb at half the price for 95% of the performance.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

I will plug in the SB Live!

If I understood correctly from reading the message stickied at the top of this forum, I should be able to plug in my current 20 pin power supply on to this 24 pin motherboard (if I do it correctly!). Judging by the pictures of the videocard on Newegg, it comes with an adapter for plugging in two of my internal 4-pin power connectors to it's own on-board power connector. I think this Enermax it should have enough "oomph" to power this new system (3.3v/5v/12v = 35A/35A/33A (max)).

I'll be migrating the old Barton, MB, and 9800 to my kids' system (currently running a slot-1 P3 & Geforce 4 Mx 440).

At some point after things are running stable and I can guage the temperatures I'm encountering, I may tinker with the fans & coolers. Is the Arctic Cooling Silencer still the shiznit for video cards? Would it outperform the copper cooler that comes stock on the eVGA CO cards (for only $15)?

Thanks again.
