My computer is almost 5 years old now, so I'm looking to replace my current one. This is what I have in mind:

Pentium D 820 (2.8 GHz dual core)
ASUS P5LD2-VM (Intel 945G)
Antec Sonata (w/ 380W power supply)
2 x Corsair ValueSelect Dual Channel DDR2 Kit (2x512MB) (total 2GB)
2 x Seagate 250GB Barracuda 7200.8 SATA w/NCQ
Asus Extreme N6600 128MB PCI-E
BenQ 16x16 DVD+/- RW

Just in case anyone was wondering, gaming is not a priority on this system. What is a priority is that the system is reasonably quiet, has good multitasking performance, and has a smooth overall user experience (I am sick of starting a program and having my whole system lock up until it is done).

Also, the reason why I am not using on-board video is because I have a dual-monitor setup, and because I want h.264 / WMV-HD hardware decoding support.

I have not built a computer in around 5 years, and I haven't really kept up with all of the new technologies. So, naturally, I have a few concerns about this current system:

a.) Do I need more than a 380W power supply? (I will not be doing any overclocking)
b.) Does anyone know if the BenQ DVD writer is reasonably quiet?
c.) Will the Pentium D result in a smooth user experience (no temporary lockups when the CPU is busy)? I have heard a few people say that hyperthreading yields a smoother system than dual-core, but that didn't sound right to me.

So, if anyone can give me any feedback on this system, that would be great! Thanks!

a) the 380W power supply is plenty. The only reason you would need more than that is if you were going to SLI 2 power hungry cards.
b) can't say much about the BenQ, but when I want silent stuff I go to this site: Text. They do have "silent" optical drives there too.
c) The Pentium D should give you a smoother system. I don't have any experience with it, but a slower system than one with hyperthreading would make no sense to me either. You should be satisfied with that chip.

I have a BenQ and I feel that it's nice and quiet, quieter than my similar NEC 3520A.
