Feedback on Memory for Precision 690

I got a precision 690 (dual proc 5150 2.66GHz) with 2 GB of Ram.

Two Part Questions.

1. For a dual proc system, is 2GB going to be sufficient most of the times?
2. Currently it has a 250GB SATAII hard drive 72K. What would be an ideal configuration for ideal Video Encoding process. (Boot, Storage, temp)

Being that I have a pre 650 with 4gb.. 2gb is more than enough.. having 4gb only gives you around 3.25 available memory.. or under 3gb at times..

For video encoding, processor speed is more important.. haven't really seen any encoder that takes advantage of 10k drives...

but whats the exact software you're running ?

By the way I paid around 1700 (including shipping) for this system. what do you think of the prices?

Dell precision 690.
Dual Proc 5150 (2.66 GHz)
2 GHz 667 FB DDR2 RAM (2 DIMMs)
16x DVD ROM
128MB Quadro 285 NVS
250 SATAII Hard disk.
Refurbished (obviously).

Is this really expensive for the machine? I really thought this was a good deal<<SOB>>. Where do you think a similar model would be cheaper?

The Dell 690's are going for well under $800.00 for that spec ram itself is no ,more than $20 a stick you have the same rig as i do maybe you can answer a question regarding video
when i first built this i had only a brandy new 690 case, I bought the board, ram, fans, drive cages, 2 5150 cpus 2.66 QC, all the internal plastics and shrouds obviously memory and video card
a family member decided they were going to borrow my nvidia 980 out of this dell rig, i do not think anything else was disturbed. now system is not posting with video i have since put in a 960 gtx low power card as i know
this particular machine cuts power in 1/2 at the pci 2.0 16x slot however this card does have aux power consisting of one 6 pin molex that on one end has 2 4 pin big drive molex that attach to spare PSU leads and of course
the 6 pin connects to the video card. i fire it off i get the 3 diag lights on the front #1 thru #3 and then hear 2 short post beeps all keyboard functions react to key presses by turning the scrl lock caps loc and num lock lights on and off
but no video. any idea why?
thank you
Rob

install a 64 bit os and you wont have the memory limit of 3.5gb like you do on 32 bit. I run Windows 7 Professional Pro x64 and I am seeing 16 gb
