i have an athlon 64 processor (3200+) and enough room for an ample 40gb partition. the only problem is, should i install mepis or fedora, or something else? i've just about had it with this worthless microsoft joke of an operating system and am prepared to switch...so what'll it be?

i would really like to make a decision soon.

I would definatly go with a debian based OS for a first timer. Ubuntu or mepis would be a great first run into linux. Personaly, I'd go with ubuntu.

Agreed, you're likely to switch three or four times before you find one you really like.

Definately. I went from Mandrake to Fedora to LSF (Linux From Scractch, I deleted this within 15 minutes ;)) to Debian, which I'm using now.

Mepis is the ONLY Linux to correctly identify my Audigy 2 Platinum. Debian, Red Hat, Ubuntu, Knoppix, ALL did NOT detect my sound card. Mepis did. Mepis also has a great community base.

Both are great linux OS. I've tried a dozen or so before deciding on Ubuntus. I've must say that MEPIS is too shabby either.
