Hi all,

I have a difficult machine. Dual P3 machine that I really want to keep running. Few problesm with it.

1. Can only boot from a floppy drive.
2. Does not seem to like NT - cannot find a hard drive to install onto.
3. Does not seem to like Win 2k any more, same with Win XP.
4. Easily runs Win 98, but a bit pointless as Win 98 only supports one processor.

Finally managed to install FC 6 via a cool Win program that redoes the boot loader stuff.

I downloaded FC 8 and would like to upgrade FC 6 to 8. How do I do that? Obviously it is not like Win where you put in the CD and it auto runs. Rmember, I cannot boot from the CD.

Oh yes, I tried the boot loader stuff with FC 8, but it got stuff after doing the partitioning stuff with something like cannot unmount a drive. that is why I thought of FC 6 then upgrade.

Any help wil be appreciated. But please explain it slowly. Not so good with Linux. Would keep away, but I want this machine to run - DC crunching.

You can do inplace upgrades with yum, but I believe most Fedora people either boot from the CD (you might be able to find a boot floppy to get you started) and do the upgrade from there or do a wipe/reinstall to change releases. If you attempt the former you'll have to go FC6->FC7->FC8 so it'll probably take a while.

Thanks Nothinman, but it does not really help. I cannot boot from the CD drive so a clean install will not help. I have tried the boot floppy / boot loader thing - see post - and it gets stuck during the FC 8 install. I don't have FC 7 and am not keep on downloading 3+ gigs of data just to upgrade. Also, I believe FC 9 will be out in about a months time.
