I've used Edgy a fair bit for fun.
Works well enough, lots of updates on a daily basis, so nothing for any kind of serious work, but it works well enough for a play box, which was what I used it for.
Never been a fan of Fedora, so I can't really give an unbiased opinion on that.

I haven't used FC in a couple of years, ever since Ubuntu/Kubuntu in fact. All of our systems here at work are on FC, but we're slowly migrating to Kubuntu as well. Well, most personal systems are running Kubuntu, including my boss.

Anyways, i prefer Kubuntu... more user friendly, with a fantastic support forum. And if you want to get xgl running, Ubuntu/Kubuntu are probably much easier to do if you're new to linux.

I would stay away from Edgy, at least until it's out of beta. Which will hopefully be REAL soon. Unliike Windows and OSX, it's VERY easy to upgrade a distro. So install Dapper for now, and once Edgy goes live, you can easily upgrade to it.

No major issues really, like I said, I'm not a fan, but I don't hate it or anything :)
APT is much nicer than yum for example, and this is before you start looking at the repos where Debian/Ubuntu has always been superior IMO.
I also don't much like Fedora's everything-but-the-kitchen-sink philosophy.

All in all, it's more a matter of Fedora not being for really, not that it's bad in itself :)

I just booted off the LiveCD for Edgy. Neither the integrated ethernet or my wireless USB NIC function. I wasn't honestly expecting the USB NIC to work though. Its disappointing that the wired connection doesn't work out of the box. :(

This is on a Compaq SFF system, slowest system I actually own. Its going to continue running Win2k for the time being. Maybe Fedora 6 or the final release of Edgy will allow the wired connection to function properly.

Well, i'm really surprised that your NIC didn't get recognize and working. REALLY surprised. Dumbfounded in fact. Are you sure the NIC is in working order? Did you try Dapper? Edgy is beta, so perhaps there was an oversight on your particular NIC during the creation of the liveCD.

I was surprised as well. Given that this machine is a Compaq SFF machine, its probably got some sort of proprietary chip. Windows 2000 doesn't recognize it either, though it does recognize my USB NIC. I tried Dapper first, Edgy was a second attempt.

Perhaps I could get it working in Dapper/Edgy, but I don't have the necessary troubleshooting skills under Linux. Edgy does see the wired NIC, but I can't access the internet, nor any of the other machines on my network. It can't ping my router either.

INCREDIBLY easy: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

That's it.

Wait... if W2K doesn't recognize it, does that mean you don't have it installed and working? Becase like i said earlier, maybe the NIC is just dead. It can happen.

But if Edgy sees it, that's weird. Are you using DHCP, and is it getting assigned an IP? Have you tried manually setting an IP?

As for the USB wireless... you'll probably have to use an ndiswrapper. Just google that, or do a google search of the ubuntu forum for it. It's 'relatively' straight forward (i say that because i couldn't get mine working 100% correctly the first couple of times... for example, i couldn't get it working with WEP or WPA enabled at all, so i had to rely on my router for mac filtering for security).

As for people new to Ubuntu/Kubuntu using Edgy to break their cherry...i seriously don't think it's a good idea, even though it's very close to being released. Even a simple thing like Firefox continuously crashing due to flash content on a site is occuring at this point in time (it's a very easy solution though) can drive you away.

The NIC is good, it functioned under WinXP. Win2k just doesn't have drivers for it. I picked this system up on the cheap, no driver CDs. When I checked the Compaq website, they have several drivers for various NIC chips. I haven't explored it further, since the wireless USB NIC works well under Win2k.
